VITAL STATISTICS.

(WM ABSOCIATIOK nUMIX.) WELLINGTON, February 22. The vital statistics for the principal towns of the colony for the month of January, 1894, show the total number of births and deaths, aad the proportion of death* to 100$ of the population, to have been as follows:—

Tb* total births in the above boroughs amounted to 463, against 383 in December, an increase of 80. The deaths in January were 209, an increase of 43 on the number in December. Of the total deaths males contributed 113, females 96. Sixty-nine of the deaths were of children under five years of age, being 33.01 per cent, of the whole number, and 58 of these were under one year of age. The vital statistics of the four cities for the year show the proportion of births to 1000 of the population to be —Auckland 27.79, Wellington 28.23, Chriitchurch 20.1, DoMdia 20,54.

The proportion ot deaths is as follows— Auckland 12.9, Wellington 13.43, Christchurch 12.8, Dunedin 12.26. A. comparison of the death rates with the Australian capitals shows the New ZeaUnd rate to he lower. There were 109 deaths from measles in the four chief towns.' In Auckland 41, Wellington 35, Christchurch 19, Dunedin 14; from influenza 16, from whooping cough 13, from typhoid 27. There were 67 violent deatns against 68 in 1888.
