William Maclldowie, about forty years of age, attempted to commit suicide at the Universal Hotel, Maclaggaa street, this morning by wounding himself in the arm with a pocket knife. Sβ went to the bathroom at eight o'clock, and as he had ndt returned; by h*lf •- past ten it was surmised that something was wrong, and on Mr -Hall, a boarder at tho hotel, visitiug the bathroom he found the man lying in the bath, which was half full of water. The Water was red with blood, and it was apparent that the man was in a. very weak state. Mrs Knox, the landlady, was informed of the matter, prompt assistance was obtained and the nature of the man's injuries ascertained. It" w»3 seen that he . had inflicted an ugly gash four inches in length at the bend of the left arm, from, which the blood was flowing. Maelldowie is a married man, and hie wife and family reside at Ailaudale, near St. Glair. In conversation with the doctor the man admitted that he was tired of his life. . He has been boarding in the hotel since- yesterday, and has been drinking heavily of late. Mac Edowie, although weak, is likely to recover from the effects of his rash act.
