SELWYN COUNTY COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Selwyn County Council was held yesterday. Present —Messrs D. McMillan (chairman), R. Westenra, W. Boag, A. VViffen, J. Rennie, W. Donlop, «J. &. Murray, and H. W. Peryman. The Chairman atated that since the last meeting correspondence had been received aa under :—Letters from several Road Boards claiming the bonus offered by the Council towards providing work-for the unemployed last winter ;also for the suppression of small birds. Girculars from the Minister of Justice appointing the Council to have jurisdiction in the'districts of Riccarton and Sejlwyn., Letter'from the Darfield Domain Board, recommending the appointment of Mr Donald Gillanders as a member of the Board, and also asking for a grant in aid. Report from Mr East on the river Halswell, and a letter from the Railway Engineer, granting permit to stop culverts during alterations in the canal. Report from the Inspector of Slaughterhouses, and thirty applications for renewal of licenses. Reports and letters had been received in respect of plantation and water-race matters. A discussion took place concerning the condition of Dyer's Pass road and the gate erected on it by the manager of the Cash- J mere Estate on the Heathcote Road Board's side of the Pass. The Port Victoria Road Board wrote asking that the road should be repaired • and the gate removed. '■. It was decided, on the motion of Messrs Westenra and Boag, .that as the matter was one between the two Road Boards interested the Council could not at present interfere. The amounts spent in relief for the unemployed by several Road Boards were as under :—Lake Coleridge £28 10a, Tai Tapn £72 9a 6d, Halswell" about £40, Riccarton £40 2s 93, Lincoln £40 2a 6dJ* He*athcote £36 16s. The Boards applied for the Council's b2rius, which Was granted; Mr Gillandera was appointed a member of the Darfield Domain Board, subject to the approval of the Minister of Lands. The Council decided to reply to the Board that it had no funds to make the grant applied for. The tender of Neil Bros, for £550 was accepted for work at the Halswell canal, Lake Ellesmere flat. The Inspector of Slaughterhouses report was read and approved, and thirty-three licences renewed. It was decided to print an agreement for the Council's bands to sign, in accordance with the Workmen's Act. ■
After dealing with plantation and water race matters, and passing accounts amounting to £1878 lls 9d, the Council adjourned.
