SEED MARKET.

Mb Geo. G. Stead (per D. B. McLaren, manager seed department), reports :— Nothing has transpired during the week to call for special comment. Locally the Beed market is easier, our spring sowing being now well advanced. Our friends in the south, however, who are considerably | later than ourselves, have still to jjrepare i for several weeks ahead, and with a bare \ market have been drawing supplies from us, and as regards clovers it is fair to ; surmise that this department, at all events, ■ will be completely swept up before the end , of the year. ! Iv ryegrass the market has not been j aclive, and the business passing at the I moment is of a very baud to mouth i character. ! Cocksfoot is almost at a standstill ; nevertheless, holders are backing their opinion, and are not prepared to accept any reduction on to-day' 3 quotations. Cowgrass—There is no alteration in the general situation ; in fact, nothing of any note has occurred since we last wrote to bring about any material change. Stocks are to light as to preclude any possibility for speculation, and we firmly believe every pound of seed held in this province will go into consumption by the time spring sowing is finished. White Clover and Alsyke stand at about the same as last quoted, the former having decidedly the best of the enquiries. Turnip Seeds—Bright sunny days, with occasional showers, have been the rule during the week and particularly favourable for sowing the early varieties. Growers have evidently taken advantage of the weather, as a fairly good business has been done. I Ryegrass—Choice machine seed, 3s 6d to 3s 9d; fair average seed, 3s to 3s 6d ; Italian ryegrass, clean and true to name, 4s | to 4s 3d. Cocksfoot—Heavy dressed, 4£d to 5d ; fair to medium, 3£d to 4d; seconds, for surface sowing, l£d per lb. White Clover—Extra bright, 95s to 100s; I clean, well-graded seed, 85s to 90s. I Cowgrass, according to quality and cleanliness, ranges from 80s to 84s. Alsyke, good quality, is saleable at 84s to 90s. Timothy, colonial grown, 40s to 455; imported, 37s 6d. Lucerne, 80s to 84s ; colonial grown, 98s. Rape, 30s to 32s 6d per cwt. The Canterbury (New Zealand) Seed Company, Limited, report on the Seed Market for the week ending September 15th, as follows -.— The season continues all that could be wished for sowing purposes, spring showers and bright sunshine carefully mixed. The early suwn paddocks are already green with a vigorous growth. Business has been very brisk during the week in nearly all varieties. Cocksfoot—Every vessel loaded for London takes a large shipment. The Lady Elizabeth, Ruahine, and Tainui have on board some 6000 sacks, and the market may be considered bare of the best quality machine dressed. We quote farmers' dressed to 3|d; machine dressed 4£d to sd. Ryegrass—Perennial has fair enquiry, and good heavy machined seed commands 3s 9d to 48, fair to medium 3s 3d to 3s 6d, farmers' cleaned 2s 3d to 3s. Italian is in good request at 3s 9d to 4s 3d. Clovers—White continues to be asked for freely, and prices are firm at: —Fair to good 80s to 90s, choice 95s to 110s. Red and cowgrass are getting in short supply and prices are stiffening. We quote fair clean seed 77s 6d to 80s, extra machine dressed 82s 6d to 85s. Alsyke is quiet at 80s to 90s, according to quality. Rape—Prices continue firm at 28s to 30s, and fair demand. Lucerne—More of this fodder plant is being sown this year. We have just landed a splendid, clean sample which we are offering at 655. Timothy has enquiry at 35s to 40s. Turnips are being more enquired for as thia season approaches. We quote 80s to 955, according to sorts. Stocks are very light, and we should not be surprised if they were found insufficient for the requirements of this season's sowing.
