ENTERTAINMENTS AND SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

— ♦. — Last night the annual parish gathering ia connection with St. Mary , *, Merivale, wu held in the schoolroom, when there wae * very large attendance, the room being filled to overflowing. A very enjoyable programme of music, 4c, was given. The Bishop of Christchurch discoursed pleasantly of hie recent visit to England. Songs were given by Miss Gibson, Mrs W. CotteriU, and the Misses Douglas, Mr Gibbe, and Master Lake. Mrs Gibbs and Mr Cheeseman sang a duet very nicely, and the Misses Meares played a piano duet, Mr M. Gardner gave ft recitation, and Mr Pern a solo. The St. George's Band of Hope meeting on the 6th inst. at Kirwee was well attended. The Rev. H. Collins presided, and in the course of a short address condemned the Government Liquor Bill, and expressed » hope that it would not pas 3 into law. Songs were given by Mrs Crosfcell, Misses Simpson and Meredith, and Messrs Belgrave, Dixon, G. Simpson, and A. Wilson, and recitations by Messrs Hitchens, Elijah Round, H. Wilson, A. Fairbairn, V. Walker, and an instrumental solo by Miss Stewart. Messrs Dixon, J. A, Wilson, G. Simpson, and Miss Meredith were added to the Committee. Eight ncr members joined the Society. The fortnightly meeting of the Juvenile Anchor Lodge, U.A.0.D., was held in the Lodge-room, Woolston, on Wednesday, P. A. Bro. Moses iv the chair. The following brothers gave songs and readings:— Bros. Biel, Moses, and Rhodes. The Lodge was then closed in due form by the A.D. An entertainment will take place this evoning at the Bible Christian Church schoolroom, Lower High street, when a i programme of vocal and instrumental muiio will be given. At the usual meeting of the Kaianoi Presbyterian Mutual Improvement Association on Wednesday last, Mr J. Stevenson gave an interesting esaay on "Heredity," and a discussion followed. NOTES~A~ND MEMORANDA. » j A meeting of the members of the Sydea- ! ham Bowling aad Lawn Tennis Club was held last night, Mr J. Forrester presiding. It was decided that as a means of encouraging bowling amongst juniors young men under twenty-one be admitted as members lat 10s for the first year, and that a trophy be obtained to be played for. It was also resolved as this is the last season for tennis on account of the bowling green being extended, that gentlemen be admitted as members at 10s and ladies at ss. The date of the annual meeting was fixed for September 27th, and the opening of th» bowling season for October 14th. The annual general meeting or the Christ' church Poultry Society will be held at the Cafe de Paris, Cashel street, on Thursday* 14th inst.. at 8 p.m. His Worship the Mayor has pre* sented a trophy, in the shape of a set of sleeve links made of Jubilea sovereigns, to be competed for amongst the city Volunteer Companies, and with a view of making the competition open to all Volunteers, Snider rifles or carbines are only to be allowed. A meeting of two delegates from each Company will be held at the College Rifles , Orderly Boom on Monday next at 8 p.m. to make the necessary arrangements. The first annual meeting of the United Bakers , Cricket Club was held at the Shades Hotel last night, a good attendance of members being present. The annual report congratulated the club on its satisfactory condition, considering the club had only been formed about three months last season. The election of officers resulted as follows :— President, Mr D. Barns; Yice-Presidente, Messrs J. Hopper and J. Tavß&vOle ; Secretary, Mr A. Rattray, reacted ; Treasurer, Mr J. Neave; Committee, Messrs Gibb, Mallack, Willis, Pegg and Pratt. The club has played nine matihes during last season, of which it won seven and lost two. It was decided to open the season on September 14th. The annual meeting of the Weedon Cricket Club was held on Monday, August 29th, when the following office bearera were elected for the ensuing year: —President, Mr R. Munroe; Vice-Presidents, Messrs W. Phillips, P. Manion, T. GudeelL and R. Thompson ; Captain, Mr J. Ellis ; Deputy Captain, Mr D. Marshall v Hon. Sec., Mr J. Curragb; Treasurer, D. Jones. It was decided to join the Selwyn County Cricket Association. Mr G. W. Russell, who is a candidate for the Riccarton seat in the forthcoming Par* liament, will address the electors at the Oddfellows' Hall, Lincoln road, to-night. The Secretary of the Christchurch Hospital desires to acknowledge with thanks the receipt of periodicals from Mrs Wyn* yard Bridge and Mrs Malet. Messrs J. J. Collins, W. Hay ward, J. C. Hughes, W. Kitson, and E. Spear have beea ! nominated for the four vacant seats on the ! Stunner Borough Council. A poll will take j place on the 14th instant. At the Caledonian Society's rooms tonight an address will be delivered by Rev. J. 08. Hoare in connection with Our - Father's Church.
