NORTHERN AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL ASSOCIATION.

■ ■«» '• ' The annual meeting of members of the J Northern Agricultural and Pastoral Asso- | ciation was held on Thursday afternoon at I the Road Board office, Rangiora. Mr W. Pearson, President, occupied the chair. I There was a large attendance of members. j The Chairman said it was satisfactory to ' know that the Association was in a flourishj ing state, He regretted that, owing to the ; low price of grain, perhaps, there had been ! some arrears in the accounts, which he ! hoped would soon be paid up. It would be ; an omissiqn on his part if he did not refer j to the lamented death of Mr Edward Chap- ] man, who took a whole-souled interest in J the work of their Society, and his decease • was a great blow to it, and, in fact, to many of the important interests of the district, Mr A. Y. Hay, on behalf of the Auditors, said they had not had time to carefully examine the reports. The assete and liabilities were quite in order and correct, j but neither Mr Amy or himself could certify I to the accounts till time had been given to ! fully go into the accounts and books. 1 The Secketaby (Mr A. Templer) said ■ the statement of assets showed :— : Liabilities —Outstanding cheques, £86 lls : 2d, and debit balance at Bank, £5314e lid ; \ balance to credit of the Association, £486 i 10s lid. The aesets were—Show ground £300, outstanding accounts £70 12s, office £75, 650 hurdles £113 15s, yards, stocks and ropes £35, marquee £27 10s, flags, furniture, &c, £5; total, £626 17e. Hβ said the Society had in a way gone back £22 on last year, but there had been an extra expenditure of £26 on cattle yards, and about £12 had to be paid for interest through the subscriptions and private prizes not coming in promptly. One or two members asked that the list of persons who had not paid private prizes be read. The President pointed out some of those who had promised such prizes might have I thought they had money to draw from the J Association and there might be other i reasons why it would be better to make a j direct) demand for the prizes promised I before making public any names. At the request of the meeting the balancesheet, as prepared for the auditors, was read, showing receipts £759 lls 6d, the main, receipts being for subscriptions £162, entries for show £225 17a, gate takings £94 10s* private prizes £163 9s 6d, trophies £18 6s, rent of ground £17 10a, right of sports £40 10s, stud horse parade £5 53. The expenditure was prize money £510 9s, advertising &c., £101 9s 2d, secretory £32 lls 6d, luncheons £22 13s, labour and payments at show £11 5s 6d, erection of yards £26 5s 7d, interest £1218s 6d, and sundry accounts bringing the amount to £813 6s sd. The account showed a debit balance of £53 14a lid. The Pbesidest considered that a little economy was necessary to put matters on an equal balance, and he thought where the Association was now receiving a rent of £15 a year for the ground instead of having to pay £5, and a judicious expenditure in advertising and printing, it would soon be able to declare a credit. Mr Mclntosh thought that all private prizes and entries should be handed in and paid before the ahow. It was stated that about forty members had not paid last year's subscriptions. The following gentlemen were elected

Matrons—Hon. H. B. Gresson, Mr R. Moore, MLH.R., Mr W. Buss, and Mr H. Blackett. Mr M. Macfarlaxe moved, Mr T. McDonald seconded—" That Mr R. W. Chapnan be elected President." Chapman was proposed, but declined ' in favour of Mr Gray, who was unani- : nously elected. ! Mr J. Fulton was elected Treasurer, i Messrs A. Y. Hay and M. Amy as Auditors. i Mr Macfaklaxk hoped the accounts nrould be earlier next year, so that the i Auditors might make their report. ', Mr K. Mclstosh complained of the < ielay in calling the meeting, and said the i ;at*logues should have been issued by this ' time. Mr Gray suggested a date be fixed, say in i the first week in August, for the annual meeting, which was ultimately adopted. Mr A. Tempter was unanimously resleeted as Secretary. Fulton, it was resolved to advertise a prize list of equal value to that of last year. On the motion of Mr Pashbt, it was resolved the President and Vice-Presidenc interview the railway authorities in regard to obtaining a siding at the Association's grounds from the Northern railway. Mr J. L. Wilsox moved —"That the Association place on record its unfeigned regret upon the lamented decease of Mr Edward Chapman, who, not only as an official but as a member of the Association, did so much for its success in recent years ; also, that a suitable letter of sympathy be sent to Mrs Chapman." Mr Pashby seconding, said the whole district had felt the loss of a gentleman who promised to become one of its leading men, and the motion was unanimously agreed to.
