SPORTING.

1 » — ASHBURTON RACING CLUB. The elements were not altogether propitious for the opening day of the Ash burton Spring Meeting, the morning being dull and threatening. The rain, however, ] held off, and the afternoon, though a trifle bleak, did not prevent the full enjoyment of the capital sport which the j racing afforded. The attendance was about the same as on the fir*t day of the ' last Spring Meeting, a considerable number of the company being made-up of excursionists from Christcnurch. The \ rains of the previous night had left the ; course a little heavy, and may perhaps have had some little influence in the results. The whole eight coloured on the card went to the post for the Cup. Libera- j tor, the top weight, being installed favourite. In the race Rosehill took com- j mand at the outset, and without ever resigning his place won comfortably from j Lady Zetland, who ran in her usual game manner, the weight on the heavy going making her resolute effort of no avail. Liberator gained the barren honour of third berth, but the Riccarton trained horse performed in the most disappointing manner. Indeed, not an animal prepared at headquarters won throughout the day. In the Steeplechase Magpie, who was by far the most heavily backed, was the first out of the bunt, for he stopped at the made up timber fence when only about half a mile had been gone, and he persistently refused to jump the obstacle. Justice and Cajolery likewiite stopped a little further on, and when half the journey was completed the race had resolved itself into a match between Matariki and Regalia. The latter skipping the second last feuce allowed the locally-trained horse to secure very easily, the victory of Mr Grigg's colours being very popular. Speculation was not at all brisk, the sum ot £1272 being the total put through the machine, which amount is some £450 less than the sum operated on on the first day last season. Following are details: — District Maiden Plate, of 20 soys. One mile. 61. Mr H. A. Knight's br m Nenuphar, by Apremont— Watersprite, 6 yrs.Bst 121b (R. Rudin«fs) 1 15. Mr W. When the horses settled into place Nenuphar took command from Starling and Aqualate, and in that order they ran throughout, Nenuphar winning very easily by a clear length, Starling being three lengths in advance of Aqualate, the others finishing in straggling order. Romeo, who 6howed a wilful disposition going to the post, ran off at the home turn. Time, lmin 53sec. Dividend, £2 3s. Ladies' Bracelet, of 30 soys. Firat, bracelet value 25 soys, second bracelet value 5 soys Two miles on the flat. 56. Mrs S. Brown's b g Kilmarnock, by • Cheviot, list 131b. aged (Mr Gordon P. Wood) 1 30. Eleridge),! and 7. yellow Jack, list 51b (Mr B. E. Harley) also started. St. Barbe made play from Kilmarnock, the pair passing the stand being some distance in front of the rest. At the far turn the field closed up, and all along the back Kilmarnock and St. Barbe ran side by side, Sherwood being next with Yellow Jack bringing up the rear. At the top turn Kilmarnock forged ahead, and at the home turn had Invader as his nearest attendant. The effort of the last named to get on terms was. however, quite unavailing, the top weight winning comfortably' by three-parts of a length, St. Barbe, who finished third, being fifteen lengths away. Time, 4uiin lsec. Dividend £2 7s. ! Ashburton Cup, of 75 soys; second 10 soys from the stake.. One mile and a half. 17. Mr S. Alexander's eh c Rosehill. by Liverpool—Rosedale, 4 yrs, 6st 12lb (C. Ray, jun.*s eh g Speoton, 5 yrs, 7sc 2lb (W.Ray) 0 There was but little delay at the post, the flag being lowered when the horses were in fine line, the first to break which were Rosehill, Specton, Stranger, and Lady Zetland. When settled down, Rosehill was at the head of affairs, Stranger and Lady Zetland being his nearest attendants, with Galtee whipping in behiud Liberator and Awarua Rose. Going down the back. Viscount took second place to Rosehill. but did not keep his place for any time, resigning to Lady Zetland, after whom came Liberator and Awarua Rose, clear daylight showing between the second lot and Specton and Galtee, the last pair. Rosehill was still in front entering the straight, and stalling off the challenge of Lady Zetland, won a little in hand by a length, Liberator a couple of lengths away third. Time, 2min 46aec. Clarke); 20, Justice, Wat (Aynslev); 14, Regalia, 103t 3lb (Powell); and 8, Victor, 9st 71b (Dunn) also started. Matariki showed the way over the double in front of the stand, being followed in order by Regalia, Justice, Cajolery, and Magpie. At the timber jump after leaving the straight Magpie stopped, Matatiki going on well clear of Regalia, there being a wider gap between the last named and Justice, Cajolery and Bell Bird coming next. At the gorse fence at the top turn Justice stopped, aud Cajolery following suit, the leading pair went right away from Bell Bird, who took third place. Over the stand double Matariki and Regalia were within a couple of lengths of one another but crossing the next fence the latter jumped away from Matariki and led down the back. Bowie, however, raced his mount up to Regalia, crossing at the gorse, while Justice and Cajolery failed to negotiate, and here Regalia, slipping round Mr Grigg's horse, came on by himself, Bell Bird on sufferance being half a dozen lengths behind him passing the post. Time, 7ruin 44sec Dividend, £4 15s. Spring Handicap, of 40 soys; second 5 soys from the a tike. Seven furlongs. 9. Mr S. At the distance Warrington drew out, An Revoir in the centre and Busybody on the outside coming through at the same time. Opposite the rails Au Revoir ranged alongside Warrington, and the pair under punishment passed the post locked together, the verdict being a nose in favour ot Warrington; Busybody a poor third.
