THE WEATHER.

A decided change took place in the weather in the Cbriatchurch and North Canterbury districts-yesterday, when a nor'wester blew, with, a few short intervals, all day, increasing in strength after mid-day. Dust flew in clouds, and in the outlying districts people could hardly stand against the wind. Trees exposed to the violence of the gusts were in many places blown down, but so- far as can be heard there was bat little damage inflicted otherwise. Our Ashburton correspondent, writiog last evening, says—A furious northerly gale has been raging since mid-day, doing a considerable amount of damage and rendering locomotion out' of doors extremely unpleasant and .difficult; A large number of trees have Taeen broken, and fences androofe of buildings have suffered. The Windermere railway station was lifted bodily from its foundations and carried clear off the siding and deposited on the tussocks half a* chain away. Between Windermere and the Hinds river many of the telegraph poles have been blown down, some of the poles being snapped short off in several places and split up like matchwood. From the river to the Hinds Railway station all the poles have been smashed about and the telegraph wires are lying along the ground. Damage has also been done further south. A hut qn a section near Mr McDowell's store, at Hinder was lifted up bodily and dashed into thousands of, pieces. Another hut was blown over, and a good deal.of damage done to outbuildings, At the time of writing (7.15 p.m.) it ie still blowing very hard. The same state of things prevailed at Geraldine, where considerable damage was done to trees, fences and roofing.
