LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Lyttelton Borougli Council was held on Monday night. Present—His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Stiason, Thompson, Webb, Owen, Chambers, and Laurcnson.

Leave of absence was granted to Crs. Schumacher, Pairman, tind Mitchell. The following correspondence waa read and dealt with :—From the Private Secretary of the late Premier,' thanking the Couiicil on behalf of ' Mrs Ballance fui their kind telegram of sympathy aud condolence. From the Railway Commissioners, re the Council's railway siding. From the Trades aud Labour Council,' Wellington, forwarding subscription lists, and asking the Council to receive subscriptions towards the Ballance Memorial Funl. Received. From the Lyttelton Harbour Board, in reply to the Council's application for a loan of £3000 from the Board's sinking fund, stating that the Board had a prior application which would have to be dealt M'ith first. From tho Lyttelton Gas Company, stating that tho Council's application for a .eduction in tho prloe of gas would be considered at a meeting of Directors to be held at an early date. From Mr G. P. Williams, Upper Ricoar* ton, offering to sell tho Couucil one ol his waste water motors for tho purpose of controlling the water now boing wasted. The matter was referred to the Water Supply Comtritteo to report upon. From Mr A. Atkinson, calling attention to tho necessity of somo repairs being effected on Voefas road. The matter was loft in the bands of the Foromau of Works, From Messrs Kayo and Carter aud Messrs Edwards, Bennett and Co., ro the railway eidiug, and asking the Council to bear auy additional charges that might be made by tho Railway Commissioners. Applications in connection with tho burgess list were received from the Rev. P. W. Fairclough, aud Messrs J. R. Anderson and T. Ninimo, and wore allowed. Tho report of the Foreman of Works detailed tho work done by the Council's men during the fortnight It was decided to call tenders for tho supply ot 200 bushels of oats, and to grant the Foreman of Works fourteen days' leave of absence. The Mayor reported that the poll for tho £3000 "loan had been held since tho previous meeting and lost. Mr Pitcaithley * had applied for and been granted a quantity of stone. The question of fencing in the Sumner road, in ; front cf Mr Schumacher's, was left in abeyance, as the Council were about to continue tho stono wall there. The bank book was laid upon tho table and showed the overdraft to bo £661 2s lOd. The list of subscribers to the Public Library who arc in arrears was laid upon tho table. It was resolved to request payment of tho subscriptions. The application of one of the Council's employees for an Increase of pay was not granted. The Finance Committee reported receipts; since kstmcotiug £33618s 9d, and recommen* | ded payments amounting to £157 0s 3d. The report was adopted. An account j from the Council's solicitor was referred back to the Finauce Committee. It was decidnd to grant a porter's license to Mr IX J. Williams.

The report of tho Engineer of the Water Works stated that the plant waa in good working order, and there was a good supply of water iv the reservoirs. On the motion of Cr. Lautenson, seconded by Cr. Owen, it was decided that tho whole quealion of the xvater supply should be referred to tho Water Supply Committee to report upon at next mooting. The Water Supply Committee advised that the item of £1 Is in Mr M. Scott's account be not allowed, as it was included in a previous account. The railway fares charged for in the account were correct. The report was adopted. The Works Committee wore asked to report upon the proposed alterations to St. David street. The meeting then terminated.
