RUGBY UNION.

A meeting of tho Committee of ,the Canterbury Rugby Union was held voaterdaj afternoon at the Clarendon Hotel. Present —Dr. Moorhousc (iv the chair), Messrs T. R. Cresswcll, T. W. Reese, T. S. Marshall, F. Evans, W- Balch, H. Frost aud Geo. Mason. An npology was received for the abseuco of Mr A. K. G. Rhodes.

The Seokkt.vry reported having made inquiries respecting a now banner, aud that tho Lancaster Park Company hud offered a donation of £5 5s towards the cost. Messrs Cressv.cll and Mat shall wero appointed to obtain designs for the banner and report. Tne Seckbtary also reported tho.arrangements whioh wore in tho course of progress for tho establishment of Thursday attcinoon football matches under tho auspices of tho Union. He read letters from tho United Grocers' Club, ami New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Association Club, applying for affiliation provided tho Union successfully inaugurated Thursday afternoon contests, ami from tho Linwood Club, statiug their intention to eutor a team. Ho also read a letter from a meeting of delegates of the N.Z.F.C. Association, Hardware, United Grocers and Diapers, and Linwood Clubs, desiring tho Union to rule that senior players bo not allowed to tako part in Thursday afternoon games. On behalf of tho Canterbury College Club, Mr Cresswell stated that that Club would probably enter a team.

The Clubs which had applied were affiliated to tho Union. It waa decided that Saturday players cligiblo for the Junior Flag could compete un Thursday; that a Hag should bo tho trophy to- be competed for ; and that Messrs Creaswell, Marshall and Evans lie a Sub-Cominittuo to draft rules.

Tho Kaiapoi Club, on behalf of the Second Fiftceu, protected against the goal in the match with North Cantorbury, kicked from a try by A. C. Wilmott, on tho ground thai tho ball touched Revell, tho Kaiapoi fiiP back, before it went over tho bar. The Refcrco wrote that ho had ruled it a goal, and gave his reasons for doing bo. Hi. decision was upheld. The Christchurch Club wrote, asking for a ruling on section h of law 3 respecting dead ball, which clashed with the case law on the same point, it was decided that tho new rules would have to bo followed.

The grounds for tho next two Saturdays were arranged ai ' under :—May 20th— Sydenham v East Christchurch and Linwood v Merivale,-at Lancaster Park ; Kaiapoi v College, at Sydenham. May 27th —Kaiapoi v East Christchurch, at Kaiapoi; Sydenham v Christchurch and Linwood v College, at Lancaster Park.
