LAKE ELLESMERE COMMISSION.

SO THE EDITOR OF THE PBE33. Sir, —After reading the summary of the report of the EHesmere Commission, one cannot help but wonder at some of tho proposed regulations' as recommended by the Commissioners. It is certainly time that someone directly interested in the fishing trade should have a say to legislation concerning it. The report recommends that the mesh be altered to sin and the size of the fiuh to 10in. No objection can be taken to this, as the fish coming to market are certainly too small. But where the Commission have gone to find that nets should be slung on the square is a matter for some ! speculation. Such a regulation would at once increase the price of the note by half, if not by two-thirds, and the cost of the gear ia .what already cripples the trade'bo much. The same remark applies to the proposed license. The report further says that it is not advisable to alter the size of herring nets, unless under very close supervision, &c If they have bo closely goue into the details of the trade they will probably know that most of the nets at present in nee (not for show) are of the eize objected to, as the regulation size (24*°) would not catch enough to pay for wear and tear. I will conclude with the suggestion that a few of the fishermen and fishmongers be appointed a Commission to inquire and report on the subject of procedure and the profession of the law generally, as it appears that lawyers are the proper persons to report on fishing.—Yours, Ac, Fisherman.
