THE FACTORY ACT.
[press association telegram.]
AUCKLAND, May 13.
Several cases for breaches of the Factory Act were heard at the Police Court to : day. Joseph Erkihon was fined 5s for not paying wages to girls for Easter Monday. A technical point raised for the defence, that tho Act was defective in not specifying the day on which such wages should,be paid, was over-ruled. John Van Breda, charged with not paying wages on Good Friday and Easter Monday, was also fined 5a and costs. The evidence showed that the girls were dismissed on Thursday afternoon and reemployed the following Tuesday. Counsel for the defence argued the employers'_ right to dismiss at any time. Dr. Giles said the clause must be interpreted so as to make the Act workable. George Powley was similarly charged, but the case was dismissed, as the factory had been closed and a new factory opened during the Easter holidays.
