SYDENHAM PROHIBITION LEAGUE.
A largely attended meeting was held in the Wesleyan Schoolroom, Sydenham, last evening. Mr Thomas Cutler presided. The proposals made by the Executive of the New Zealand Alliance for the federation of the various Prohibition Leagues throughout the colony with that body were discussed, and it was resolved that—" This League approve of the proposals for the federation of the Prohibition League."
It was resolved that the League co-operate with the Christchurch Prohibition League in holding a series of Sunday eveniug meetings in the Tuam street Hall, the first of which is fixed for to-morrow.
On a motion, proposed by Mr T. E. Taylor, seconded by Rev. J. N. Bottle, it was resolved—" That it is desirable that a Direct-Veto Conference for Canterbury be held in Cnristchurch immediately after the opening of the next session of Parliament, and tbat arrangements be made for same forthwith."
The question of the approaching licensing elections in the Sydenham licensing wards was considered and the following resolution was unanimously carried —" That in view of the recent decision of the Appeal Court, which practically disqualifies temperance men from sitting upon a Licensing Bench, and is tantamount to a declaration that the present licensing legislation fails'to give the people any effective control over the traffic in intoxicants, the League declines to take any action in connection wfyh the approaching licensing election*., and centres its efforts upon securing the immediate alteration of the licensing law in direction of giving the adult population of each licensing district the right to exercise the uuconditioual power of direct veto over all forms of licenses."
