LAND BOARD.

An ordinary meeting of the Canterbury Land Board was held on Thursday, when there were present—Messrs J. W. A. Marchant (Chief Commissioner), D. McMillan, R. Meredith and Hon. W. C. Walker. Mr Marchant said as that was the first meeting of the Board since the death of the Hon. John Ballance it was incumbent upon him as Chairman to give the Board an opportunity of passing a resolution on the subject. He had drafted a resolution which would, be trusted, meet the circumstances of the case. He brought the matter before the Board because some of them felt they had lost a personal friend. In former years, as Miuister of Lands, Mr Ballance was his chief, and he moved the resolution with tho utmost feelings of regret, and in tho hope that it might in some slight degree show their sympathy with the feeling of loss that had been caused. He therefore moved—" That the members of the Canterbury Land Board desire to place on record their regret at the death of the Hon. John Ballance ; their sense of the great loss thereby sustained by the people of New Zealand, and most respectfully to convey to Mrs Ballance their expressions of deep sympathy with her in her bereavement." Mr McMillan seconded the motion, which was supported by the Hon. W. C. Walker, and carried unanimously. The following business was then transacted :— Run 38, Nimrod survey district, on small grazing run lease to Jas. H. Morris, by ballot; R.S. 35476, Opuha survey district, on similar terms, to J. Mcintosh, by ballot; R.S. 36477, Burke survey district, to Donald McMillan, on same terms, by ballot. W. W. Wood was granted lot 5, Connington Village Settlement; W. The Commissioner reported the sales by auction of runs Nos. 208 and 209, Ashwick Station, held at Timaru on April 19th. It was resolved to accept Mr T. R.
