ASHBURTON RACING CLUB.

The weather yesterday was dull and cold for the openh.g day of the Ashburton JUcing Club's aurumn meeting, and the attendance was not perhaps up to the usual average. There w.-is, however, i strong Christcharch contingent present. The racing all through was very interesting, and tne finish fur theciiief event quite an exciting one. At the home turn the chances of half-a-doz -v of the runners appeared about equal, but Buddicombe on liord Zetland secured a slight advantage by getting inside berth. At the diatauce post Lord Zetland drew out, followed by JSpecton, and the pair fought but a.great finish, the verdict being in favour of the Timaru representative, Liberator, who was going faster thau auything at the finish, a good third. The sister to Lord Zetland annexed the Flying Haudi.cap, but had to be hard ridden to shake off I<ord Aston, who got away none too well. (The Messrs Hobbs stable were also to the fore in the Ash burton Stakes. Saracen was started a warm favourite, wearing down Errington in the last hundred yards, and getting home by a length. The Netherby High Weight Handicap was somewhat spoilt by the favourite Aquarius being left at the poet. During the day the sum of £1333 was passed through the totali sat or, which is a considerable falling oft from the amount handled on the first day of last season's autumn meeting. There were a number of cash fielders on the ground, and several of these were ejected at the instance of the Stewards, who expressed their determination to cope with the difficulty. Following are details cf the racing :—
