SYDENHAM.

An ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Sydenham Borough Council was held at 7 p.m. yesterday, when there were present —His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. Jacques) and Crs. Langdown, Samuels, Mutfett, Madfield, Smith, Rudd, Forrester, Winny and Brown. Leave of absence was granted to Crs. Booth, Taylor and Nancarrow. A letter was read from a number of ratepayers in the Waltham ward, calling attention to the bad state of the Waltham road from Jackson's Creek to Wilson's bridge. The matter was referred to the Works Committee. The Town Clerk, Christchurch, wrote, stating that Thursday, May 18th, had been appointed for the conference of delegates from local bodies, to consider the question of purchasing ox taking over the Canterbury tram lines.

In connection with Dr. Anderson's report on the causes of certain cases of typhoid fever, the Committee recommended that the nest contract for scavengers' work be framed to provide for the removal of night soil from every house in the borough, and that in the meantime the borough Inspector be instructed to serve notice upon the owners of the various properties to compel the removal of night eoxl not leaa then ooce a fortnight from all houses in the Newtown and Waltham wards, and from such parts of the Adchneton and Eaefc wards as the Inspector sball chink necessary. The Committee requested, authority to invite tender* for erecting a roof over the bath and heating the water, in accordance with the propofcale submitted by the Committee. A special meeting of the Ootineil held at 8 p.m., re signing the burgess list, was adjourned for a fortnight.
