THE CIRCUS.
» ■'~■■' •- The afternoon performance* yesterday was well patronised, and the programme was most successfully given throughout. Last night there was a very large attendance, every part of the spacious tent being filled to overflowing. The first change of programme was given on and strong as was the one with *gmch Mr Fillis' company opened here, *BSfe.t of last night was, if anything, moHje attractive. The performing tiger Somdia, under the plucky and able, supervision of Mr Cox,' gave a,wonderfully! clever performance,.evincing how training.can extinguish, at any rate for the time being, the natural characteristics of the-linimai. This act, alike from its novelty and the wny in which it is done, is about one of the most effective ever introduced into : a circus performance. Several hew artistes were introduced last night. Amongst these may be noted Miss Alexandra, tße clever lady gymnast. This lady gave one of the best performances on the trapeze that we have had here. The most difficult feats, were accomplished with an ease and grace which made them appear far more easy than they really were Mr Charles Bullianoo gave a very fine act on a bare-backed horse, and Master Taylor's protean act on the high wire was excellent. Of course Mr FiEis' riding in the jockey act was most highly appreciated by the audience, as it well deserved to be. We have not had here an artist equal to Mr Fillis in his line. Two pretty items were introduced, one called garland manoeuvres on horseback, and the other, Cjeaux de Rose, a French equestrian gamefi>f touch. In the latter each of the three lady riders, Madame Fillis and Misses Minnie and Alexandra, wore rosettes on the shoulder, and the game was to snatch the rosette. Some remarkably good handling of the horses and dexterity wast'shown by the ladies. Madame Fillis repeated her artistic item of the Haute Ecole, which was greatly appreciated. The other items included some clever somersaults by oae of the clowns, comic entrees by Walter Holt and Merry Benham, and the performing elephants and lions. This afternoon the next mftinee will be given, and in the evening the usual performance will take place.
