The monthly meeting was held on M*y Ist. Present—Messrs Carpenter, Bailey, Taylor, Marsh and Carr. The Returning Officer stated that Messrs Carr and Bailey had been elected unopposed as members to represent Nos. 1 and 4 sub-divisions respectively. Mr Carpenter proposed that Mr Marsh be elected Chairman for the ensuing year. Mr Bailey, in seconding the motion, said he did not wish to reflect in any way upon the discharge of the duties of Chairman by Mr Carpenter during many years of office, but that he thought it desirable that every member afier a fewyears' service should occupy the chair. The motion was supported oy Messrs Taylor and Parr. Mr Marsh thauked the members for this token of their confidence in him, and stated lie would use his be3t endeavours to follow in the steps of his predecessor, and hoped that with the members' co-operation to carry on the Board's business to thebeuefit of ratepayers generally. Mr Taylor then moved the following resolution, aud in doing so, said he felt quite sure he was only expressing the feeliuge of his fellow members—" That this meetiug sincerely regrets the death of the Hon. Mr Ballance, by which the colony loses a very able statesman, and that this resolution be placed on record, and a copy thereof forwarded to Mrs Bitllance, expressing the deep sympathy of this Board with her ia her sad beroavament." Correspondence was read. From the Inspector of Stock, forwarding several pamphlets for distribution. From Mr C. Al. Brooke, giving quotations for poisoned wheat. The Clerk was directed to procure two sacks each of brokeu and whole wheat. From the Registrar of Electors, asking the Board to allow the office to be used by claimants for registration. Grauted conditionally. From Mr N. J. Suckling, asking for repairs on road opposite the entrance to his property. The Clerk stated the necessary work had been done. Approved. From the Waimakariri River Board, directing the levying of rates for the year ending 31st March, 1894, as follows: —Class 1 at onesixteenth of a penny in the £, and Class 2 at three sixty -tourths of a penny in the £. Deferred until the striking of the general rate. From the Auditor General, returning balance-sheet duly certified. Audit fee, £1. The Surveyor's report wus read and the following resolutions carried — That the acceptance by the ex-Chairman and Clerk of the tender of J. Rowe for cleaning out Jetfs drain at 3s 6d per chain be approved ; that the contract for metalling on the Templeton township roads, which is not yet completed, the metal not being broken to gauge, be closed, after the reduction of 2a per chain from the balance due to the contractor as authorised by him ; that the breaking of the mstal to a 2£in guage be let by tender; that the Clerk submit a statement to the next meeting of the Board of the approximate income and expenditure for the cutrent year; that the consideration of the resolution passed this day at the annual meeting of ratepayers with reference to the levying of a uniform general rate throughout the district be deferred until the next meeting of the Board; that the necessary teams and day men be employed for the ! coining season; that the Clerk eubinit a i report upon the condition of the Racecourse j road, with recommendations as to the best ! mode of improving same ; that the member representing the Riccarton riding on the Selwyn County Couucii be written to and asked to keep this Board well informed upon the question of maintenance of maiu roads I now awaitiug consideration.
