CHRISTCHURCH.
Th<» annual election of Mayor for the Oitf of Christchurch took > place yesterday, and excited more interest than usual. The walk* over, early anticipated by the friends of Councillor Prudhoe, was upset by the supporters of Cr. Bonnington, who, at thext request, consented to be nominated. Thia created a healthy rivalry, necessitated organisation on both aides, and caused the appointment of Ward Committees. Thf work of the latter aroused the ratepayers to a sense of the position, and resulted in numerous visits to the polling booth*. No great amount of vehicle accommodation was observed, though a few cabs worked ia the interest of their respective patrons, and the majority of voters were to be teen trudging to the polling places on foot. The contest waa keenly carried out during th* day, 1153 votes being recorded. Cr. Prudhoe was the successful candidate by a small majority, and when the declaration waa made the ratepayers assembled gave him three cheers. Tho results are as under :■— Christchurch. Richmond. Total W. Prudhoe 685 19 604 G. Bonning" ton :. 454 90 644 Informal ... 4 1 6 Majority for Prudhoe, 60l
