CANTERBURY LAWN TENNIS CLUB.

A meeting of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Club was held on Wednesday. It was decided to play Southbridge at the Cranmer Square Courts on Monday, May 25th. The Lin wood wrote to say they would be unable to meet the C.L.V.C. on the day following the Queen's Birthday, as it was arranged that a Men's Double Handicap Tournament should be played off on that day. Mr E. J. Ross has kindly offered a prize. Play will commence at 10.30. The following handicap tournaments have been arranged: — Men's Singles, Men's Doubles, Ladies' Singles, Ladies' Doubles. The entries for the Men's Handicaps will close on Saturday, May 30th, and the entries for the Ladies' on Friday, May 29th. It has also been arranged to hold a status tournament during the season, the outlines of which are as follows: —All members in the Club will be handicapped at the commencement of the season, and will be divided in classes, ABC, &c. Any member may play any other member a status match, each starting from their handicap. Each member shall play eighteen matches during the season. If he win twelve he will be promoted one class, and if he wins fifteen he shall be promoted two classes. If he has lost twelve matches he is out of the status tournament. At the end of the season all those who have won twelve matches will play off for three prizes. The tournament will extend from the opening day to 30th September. Mr Blackburn has kindly offered a prize in this tournament.
