OTAGO UNIVERSITY.
THE SCHOOL OP MINES,
(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.)
DUNEDIN, May 14.
A deputation from the University Council waited on the city members to lay before them a statement of the affairs of the School of Mines. The Chancellor, Dr. Stuart, gave a history of the School and the circumstances which led successive Governments to vote -5500 annually, wliich the Hon. R. J. Seddon now seemed inclined to withdraw. Mr J. Allen also traced the history of the School in the earlier days. The charge that the School was not a Buccesa might have some foundation, but the numbers attending the lectures had gone up to forty-nine, forty-six, and fifty for the last three years. These figures did not include students attending chemistry, physics, mathematics and drawing. He read a list of twenty-two names or those who had attended the school and now held prominent positions in regard to mining, one being in the Sandhurst School of Mines, another holding office in Tasmania, another the Head of Kyneton school, Victoria, another a mine manager at Mount Zeehan, and another at Broken Hill, while others were surveyors and engineers. Fifteen of the students last year had spent six months of the year in practical work at various mines in the colony to gain certificates. The members intimated that they would be prepared to urge the Minister to continue the grant, and would support it when placed on the Estimates.
The undergraduates afterwards interviewed the members to ask them to support a Bill similar to that of last year giving graduates representation on the Council.
