Valparaiso, May 13. It is reported that the insurgent navy defeated President Balmaceda's ships off Callao.

Washington, May 13. A quantity of munitions of war which were intended to be shipped to Valparaiso for the use of the rebels has been seized by the authorities.

The report that the proposed mediation between the Chilian belligerents had ended in failure is premature. France, Brazil, and the United Btates are continuing their efforts to briug about a peaceful settlement by meaua of arbitration, aud they are coniideut of success.
