KAIAPOI BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of this Council •was held on Tuesday evening. Present— The Mayor (Mr Blakeley), Cra. Weston, Butt, Fraser, Bugg, Stanton, Doubleday, and Blighting. Letters were read—From Mr R. Thompson and others, drawing attention to dangerous and filthy state of Beswick street drain. From Dr. Murray, regarding same. Referred to Works Committee for report. From Mr S. K. Seager, Darfield, for balance of sale of horse disposed of out of pound. Referred to Finance Committee. From Mr Knight, poundkeeper, for a horse post to be erected. Agreed to. From Eyreton Road Board, stating the Board would, pay for cleaning Ohoka road drain if the Council accepted control of the road for all its length. Cr. Doubleday moved, Cγ. Butt seconded— "That if the road was shingled the Council would take it over, the Board afterwards to pay half cost of repairs." Carried. From Mr G. Johnston Webster, stating Messrs Oram and Wearing with himself would convey land for Darnley square on condition of receiving in exchange an equal quantity on Smith street., Mr Webster to survey and convey fclie 13.nc2. to ■the Council on consideration of receiving ct part Of Sewell street to be closed. Cr. Fraaer moved, Cr. Brigtting seconded " That the offer be accepted," Cr. Butt pointed out that before the Council give its consent the permission of the burgesses and the Mandeviile Road Board should be first obtained to closing any part of Smith street. Cr. Bugg advocated the Councillors laying aside all technical objections in order to gain the advantages of a recreation ground -when there 'was such a degree of harmony throughout the borough upon the subject. Cr. Brighting stated in this instance there were two roads parallel to each other — namely, Beach road and Smith street. The former was maintained jointly by the Council and Mandeviile Road Board, Smith street was entirely in the Council's control. The motion was carried, Cr. Butt dissenting. The Works Committee reported accepting a tender for £10 8s for the removal of a building for the fire station. The door of the morgue had been broken, lamp glas3C3 had been broken,-* and a corner post broken, which matters were recommended to be referred to the police. Report adopted. The Finance Committee reported receipts, J63 2s; overdraft general account, £319 15s 10d; loan account credit, JEL4S 17s. Accounts, £37 2s 9d, were passed. In reference to certain charitable aid cases it was decided that a Committee of the Mayor. Crs. Weston and Fraser be appointed to report on the same. A tender for shingle at 2s IOJd per. yard was accepted. A tender to clean Beach road at 2s per chain was referred to the Works Committee. It was decided to ask the Harbor Board to remove willows from the spits in the river. Cr. Brighting moved, Cγ. Doubleday seconded—" That a vote of thanks be passed to the Volunteers for the gift of a building for the purposes of the Fire Brigade." Carried, It was resolved, on the motion of Cr. Doubleday, that footpaths be repaired and asphalting renewed. After passing some formal business the Council adjourned.
