WOMEN'S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION.

The annual meeting of this Union took place on January 14th in the upstairs room of the Tea and Coffee liestaurant, Manchester street, at 2.30 p.m. i'he following officers were re-elected:—Mrs Kiuharuson, President; Mr? Newtoa, Corresponding Secretary; Miss Packer, Recording Secretary ; Miss Gordon, Treasurer. The superintendents of departments were elected as follows:—Mrs Venables, Literature; Mrs Guise, Social Purity ; Miss Brett, Sunday School and Juvenile Work; Mrs Corlett, Kellef Work; Mrs Duggan, Agricultural Show; Miss Barber, hygiene (instead of Mrs May, who resigned); Mrs England, Bible in Schools; Mrs Sheppard, Franchise and Influencing the Press. it was announced that the annual Convention would be held iv Christchurch this year, and the time (which had yet to be fixed by the National Executive) would probably be either on the last week in February or the first week in March. Many members present said they would oe glad to offer hospitality to the expected delegates. The Franchise Superintendent said that only three out of the fifteen Canterbury candidates were avowedly unfavorable to woman suffrage. She would not, however, advise the members to place much confidence in those who declared iv favor of the measure, and yet said they would not support it until a majority of women asked for it. This had not been the method of procedure when men had the franchise granted to them. In the majority of cases their political education did not begin until after the privilege of citizenship was extended to them, and no good reason existed why women should be differently dealt with. After Mrs Richardson had addressed the members, in a few well-chosen words, thanking them for her re-election, and referring to the failures and successes of the past year, from which experience and hope had been gained, the meeting closed.
