UNITED CANTERBURY C. C. v ASHLEY C.C.C.

This match was started, on Saturday, at Rangiora, and at the present stage promises to be an easy win for the Ashley team, for if the game is not played on the second day victory rests with the side ahead on the first inuings. The wicket, which looked in fair order, proved to be very wet and slow and hard to score upon, but as the afternoon went on it dried somewhat, and seemed rather easier.

The XJ.C.C.C. won the toss and elected to bat. A very bad start was made, Uartland, Mathias and A. Harmon being out for 11 runs. However, on Rolleston joining Cotterill, a good stand was made und 28 runs were added before the former was bowled by a shooter, after playing very steady cricket for his runs. Unfortunately for the hopes of the U.C.O.C. the next batsmea were unable to improve matters, for at 46 T. Harman was bowled in trying to hit a tempting ball from Blunden, and one run later R. 1). Harman was well caught at leg oft" a good hie On Fen wick joining Cotterill there promised to be a stand, as both men were playing confidently. However, at 56 the latter, in attempting a big hit, skied a ball to long-on, where Wilder brought off a well -judged catch. The retiring batsman had played good cricket, though just before his dismissal he skied one or two balls just out of reach of the fieldsman, boon afterwards Fenwick was bowled with a shooter, and with eight out for 57 matters looked serious for tne batting side. Lane and Aldred by capital criclcet made things somewhat brighter, and pat on 2S runs oefore the former was bowled by a clipper from Helmore. He showed first-class form for his 16, and played the best innings for his side. Five runs Jater Aldred was caught after playing good defensive cricket at a critical period. As will be seen by Che analysis the bowlers all did fairly well, while the fielding was capital, Wilder being in especially good form. On the Ashley going in to bat it looked as if another sinah score would be made, as three wickets were down for 23, of which Helmore had made 10, chietly by good leg, hitting. Sale and Chapman, however, showed most stubborn defence, and kept their wickets intact until time, the score being 74 for three wickets. Both men played very pluckily, Chapman's inning* oeing somewhat better, as Sale received some consideration from the field. The U.C.C. fielding was not up to the mark, several chances of running out being badly missed. Of Che bowlers Mathia* was the most successful.
