SOUTH CANTERBURY.

At the South Canterbury Board of Education, yesterday, the Chairman referred to tbe death of Mr R. A. Barker in feeliug terms. Mr Howell moved and Mr Goldsmith seconded a motion—"That the Board desires to express its sincere sympathy with the relations of the late Mr R. A. Barker, and also their sense of the loss sustained by themselves of a most painstaking colleague who bad served On the Board for a long period ot years." The motion was carried unanimously. The resignation of Rev. Geo. Barclay was received, and It was resolved— That this resignation of the Rev. Geo. Barclay as ajaiember ot the Board be accepted with great regrec, be having been a member of the Board from its start and given the greatest assistance by his thorough knowledge of every branch of the business, his au wearied attention at Board and Committee meetings, his work as scholarship examiner, and in. preparing .most of the rules and regulations which have been adopted of late years. The Boaid feel therefore that they are suffering a great loss in his resignation. The resolution was carried I unanimously. The Chairman stated that the resignation had been received of Mr McLaren, of the Hook. He bad approved of a sewing mistress at Seadown, and named Miss M. Islip as pupil teacher there. He had also appointed Miss Sutherland as sewlne mtstres* at Cave, and noted that Mr Lyali, the Chairman, who had been so Instrumental in furthering the interests of that school, had resigned in consequence of leaving the district. Mr Jas. Smith had opened the Sandhurst school with a very good attendance. Mr Graves had been appointed headmaster at Waimate, and Mr A. C. Blake second master at Timaru main school. The Building Committee recommend the erection of a new school at Pleasant View, enlargements at Bel-eld, Upper Waitohi, Adair, Klngsdowo, Rangitira Valley, and improvements at several other schools. Tbe following is the result of the Scholarship examination :—Seniors (possible total marks 950)— W. J. R. Gore, Temuka District High school, 598, £34; Agnes Balfour, Timaru High school, 565, £34; Marian McCaskhill, Temuka District High school, 487, £4; Lillian Brown, Temuka District High school, 483, £4. Juniors (possible total marks 800)— Eliza M. McGimpsey, Waimate District High i school, 535 (candidate for Education I Board and Waimate High School Board scholarships, and accepts tbe latter): E. 6; Parr, Hazelborn, 683, £34; Mabel Alexander. Upper Otato.
