NORTH CANTERBURY.

. The ordinary meeting of the North Canterbury Education Board was held yesterday. Present—Messrs H. W. Peryman (Chairman), R. Meredith, J. Joyce, T. H. Anson, T. S. Weston, A. Saunders, P. Westenra, E. G. Wright, and J. BuddenThe Buildings Committee reported that a letter was received from the Wakanui Committee explaining how they came to Jucur the expenditure for water supply, and asking for a reconsideration of the Board's decision. In view of tbe circumstances mentioned it was resolved to allow the amount. The Loburn North School Committee reported chat the repair of the pump had cost only £1, and asked leave to spend tbe other £2 iv patting up a shed for the master's horse. It was resolved that the amount could not be granted. The Chairman reported that he had accepted the tender of Messrs Davidson and Wilson for tbe Waltham school buildings for the sum of £1277 16s, fencing and gates £14 15s. The Chairman's action was approved. A range for the teacher's house at Hurunui was allowed. It was resolved to accept an ; offer from the Courtenay Road Board of two acres of land, jaart of reserve 2619, for I a school site at Upper ureendale. The I Darfield School Committee applied for £3 S for new gates. They were reminded that [ the keeping of fences in order was one of I the charges imoosedon the incidental fund.

The Ferry Road School Committee again called attention to the repairs and Improvements applied for, and asked for repairs to the house. A report on the subject was received from the Cleric of Works, and the repairs recommended by him were authorised. The Clerk of Works was directed to report as to an application for painting and for repairs to the master's house, Kaiapoi Island. Applications were received from the West Christchurch Committee for grading the floors at the main school, and from the Rotherbara and New Brighton Committees for masters' houses. They till there should b3 funds available. The Russell's Fiat Committee again applied for an enlargement of their achoolropm. It was resolved that the case should be favorably considered whenever the Board was in funds. The addition of two rooms to the master's house at Glentunnel in the form a lean-to at the end of the house was authorised. On the report of the Clerk of Works, repairs to the school building at Papanui were authorised. New blinds and repair of the fences were left to be provided for by the School Committee. The alteration ot fire-places at the side school, St. Albans, was authorised, but no grant was made for tbe additional well applied for. The School Committee were requested to arrange about the fencing. The Clerk of Works reported tbat the pipe drain from the closet was not choked, bat needed a small repair. It was resolved to Inform the East Christchurch School Committee accordingly. The report was adopted. Tbe Appointments Committee reported the following appointments:—" Chertsey, Mr D. T. Todd, master; Newland, Miss S. Buck, mistress (9ole charge); Christchurch West, Miss E. McGregor, assistant mistress; Christchurch East, Ernest Smith, Edward Hudson, Mabel Smith, and Myra Dickenson, pupil teachers; Christchurch West, Margaret Watson, Clara Smith, LilJie Gilmour, Dora O'Callaghan, Norman Pavitt, and James Irwin, pupil teachers: Sydenham, Grace Brown, Elizabeth Tullock, Henry Amos. Charles Bird, and Rosa Corsble, pupil teachers; St. Albans, Amy Christian, pupil t e acher ; Richmond, Wilfred Chaplin, pupil teacher ; Kaiapoi, James Lynskey and Myra Wilson, pupil teachers ; Ashburton, John Purchase and Mabel Trezise, pupil teachers; Tinwald, John Lewis, pupil teacher; Southbridge, Annie Rlordan, pupil teacher; Sbuthbrook, Annie Turner, pupil teacher; Templeton, Frank Benjamin, pupil teacher; New Brighton, Maud Glanville, Supil teacher. The resignation of Miss 'erens, mistress of French Farm School, and Miss A. Keand, of Phtllipstown, were received and accepted. The Prebbleton School Committee applied for the appointment of another pupil teacher, but it was found that the average attendance was hot yet up to the requisite number. The application for the appointment of a mistress at Woodside was farther considered. It was resolved that the request could not be complied with unless the Committee could arrange for the removal of the pupil teachers to some other school. Examination reports were received from Mr Wood on Russell's Flat, Aunat, Kowat Bash, Glentunnel, Glenroy, Governor's Bay, Charceris Bay, Teddlngton; aud from Dr. Anderson on Westerfleld, Ashburton Forks, Winslow, Eiffelton, Willowby, Flemington, Ashton, Longbeach, Hinds." The report was adopted. Mr Veel wrote to the Board as under :— " I have the honor, on behalf of the Inspectors and myself, to submit the complete returns of tho annual examination of pupil teachers. The number examined was 175, as follows:—End of first year, males 10,female9 31, total 41, passed 31, failed 10; end of second year, males 22, females 22, total 44, passed 35, failed 9 ; end of third year, males 9, females 29, total 38, passed 27, failed 11; end of fourth year, males 15, females 37, total 52, passed 40, failed 6; Totals, males 56, females 119, total 175, passed 139, failed 36. Appended are lists of the names ot those who passed for each year, arranged in two classes tn alphabetical order, and for the further information of the Board a tabulated statement showing c"he marks gained by each pupil teacher in each of the subjects for examination." It was decided, at the request of Mr Wright, that a return should be supplied showing the proportion of failures. Mr Meredith gave notice to move— "That the matter of admission into the Normal Training School of all pupil teachers who have succeeded In passing their fourth year examination be regulated on the results of examination, the report of the Chairman of each School Commit' tee, and head teachers of schools where the pupil teachers have been engaged." He suggested that the Inspectors be asked to f;ive the Board information as to the eugth of time required to examine these schools. He, however, moved that the matter be referred to the Appointments Committee, which was agreed to. In reply to the resolution ol Mr Saunders, passed at the last meeting of the Board, Mr Habens wrote tbat the defects in the School Committee Election Act, to which attention bad been drawn, would be considered when the Act was under revision. The first objection lay against the Ace of 1887. The second did not seem, to be so very important. The third, of course, required attention at the first opportunity. In respect to a letter from the Papanui Schopl Committee, asking for an increase in their incidental allowances, Mr Wright observed that he thought an. increase could not be made without the Board first going into the whole question of proportion- He moved for the meantime—"That the Committee be requested to supply, information as to how the money nad been spent." This was agreed Co. Mr Weston moved as p?r notice— "That the .scholarship regulations be amended by. tbe omission of the words 'within the.district* in regulation 9, and by the addition of the words * approved by .the Board.'
