OUR EXPORTS.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PBK3S. Sib,—ln common with most people lam greatly pleased and surprised at the marvellous growth of our New Zealand export trade. -But what I cannot understand is, how it comes about that our imports do not increase proportionately. It appears to mc that we are sending away over three millions per annum more than we are receiving: what is becoming of the money? For all practical purposes that three millions is lost to us; for I understand enough of political economy to know that* if it came back it would reach us in the form of imports. Large sums of money never reach a country in coin, only in goods. The question is: Is* this state of things a healthy sign ? are we not sending money {i.e. goods) away and receiving no return? Can you throw any light on this most interesting aad important problem?— Yours, &c, Economist.
