UNION ROWING CLUB.

The presentation of prizes in connection with the Union Rowing Club took place at the Clarendon Hotel last night. There was a fairly good muster of members, apparently enjoyed themselves heartily. In the course of the evening several toasts were given, and a number of songs with swinging choruses were contributed. After the toast of the Queen had been loyally honored theorizes were distributed by the Chairman, Mr H. Thomson, who was supported on his right by Mr Boulton, Captain of the Canterbury Club, and on his left by Mr A. Loughrey, M.H.R.

The prize winners of the season were :— Trial sculls—C. H. Partridge, R. F. Crosbie, C. Gee cox. The President's Cup—G. W. Forbes, E. E. Patten, J. S. Howell, G. H. Mason, W. Wallace cox. The Club in the past year had been unsuccessful, and this was in a great measure due to the want of proper training and practice of the crews together. The last year had pointed out some faults, and these he nowemphasised. One thing they would have to do, and that was to submit themselves to a coach, who, when once selected, anust be obeyed. He offered his remarks with every desire to see the Club succeed, and hoped next year to notice great improvement. (Applause.) Mr F. J_. Kesteven, in responding, agreed that neglect of training was chieflyresponsible for the Club's failure, yet he had every confidence in the position being much improved in the coming twelve months. Excepting in regattas, the Club had not gone back. The membership had increased from 131 to I<s_; the contributions from £199 to £254; the total receipts, with only some £20 odd for regatta money, were in an advance by £74. and the Club s own races had been well patronised. (Cheers.) The other toasts were "President and Vice-Presidents," proposed by Mr Allard, and responded to by .Messrs Thomson and LotreHBEY, and " Other Rowing Clubs."
