W.j«i»hop. ».W»\S. H fjeoaoaii. W. _sS£rt. Ot- McKeUar. J. Halley. St-rteas-Tir W. G. <£°<& —Mr W. K. __ad_u_on. Manddcapper—air J. Crewe. Handicappera f« W Krimn-taw and J. Mc___uar. Cleric or C^'u^sS_^l^uklsh. Scalesair W.- ST Woodman. Treasairer-Mr H. Briiton.

The Ellesinere annual races took place at Leeston yesterday. The weather was most favorable, though towarus the close j of the day a nor'-west zephyr sprang up and made the dust fly. This however, was not so annoying to the spectators as t j those who took part in the events- Xne management was ail that could be desired. The races started half an hour after the time announced On the card, being got ottT iv good time. Tbe attendance was very good, quie up to that of last year, and the uunioer of visitors by train from Christchurch showed that the Leeston meeting is a most popular one. Mr Morsheaa managed his secretarial duties with effi ciency, and the various officials were all good workers, ihe number of cashoetting men, gamesters and spielers on the ground was as numerous as ever, but, with the exception of one bit of a scuffle between two men of mature years, the proceedings passed off most pleasantly, and the meetings na\e- not lost in the estimation ot the public by this latest addition to the long list. Royalty had things pretty well his own way in the District iiuruies, but he was not equal to asking Ixiou to gallop so soon after his first disnuv. ana iv no case would he have taeea a taatch fos the son of Le Loup, whofenced in a quick and clever style. Bed Cross was a cut above the field opposed tp her, both in quality and condition, and she had no trouble to win the Maiden, while Yarra perhaps a trifle better than and c'ouut D'Qrsay not quite up to form of last week, had tue finish of the EUesmere Cup to themselves, and the local representative won nicely, and tneu the Uividend of the day cauae, as there were several hotter favorites in the District Handicap Tim© Saddle lrot than jsraulein, who *had a osec win from lolaatne, who flattered ber solitary backer by running second. Had she trotted kindly from the start sue would perhaps nave won. Yarra had an easy win in tue jrublicaus' Purse, and Red Cross beat Marie comfortably in the Flying. Alter bruy had eiiectea a bit of a surprise by winning the Selling Race, Count D Orsay annexed the Consolation, in which he started a hoc favorite. The meeting was reanarisable for the successes of the local stauie, presided over by R. __iugan. .Mr Henley, one of the patrons, secured lour of the events, and _vir Bussell two, whUe Mr H. Lunu trained lxiou and Count ii Orsay. The following arethe results :— District Hubdijc Kace Handicap, 20 soys; second, o _ovs iroui »taa_e_. One aiwie auia a-nait. ' . . 63. Mr _•. J.
