'The workmen on the Palmerston-Ashurst tt-fway are protected under the WorkttJea's Wages Act, and may obtain an to prevent the Government gfjffig over any moneys due to the contractor. The Government have in hand about -8500 due to the contractor'for last cocnth's work, and it is understood that several workmen have already taken steps tofcave! ibis impounded. . The seven days' notice required by law have been served on .the contractor to proceed with the work, sad unless he accedes, probably the Government will step in and call for fresh lenders.
PiCLMERSTON NORTH, October 25. The hitch which occurred in connection with the Palmerston-Ashurst railway contract has not been settled, and the work ttfll remains stopped.
