LYTTELTON RECREATION GROUND.

OPENING SPORTS.

-Those CoonciUow of the Lytteltoa Borough Council, who were the prim* movers in getting the recreation ground tor Lyttelton, deserve the thanks of the community, for in spite of great and persistent opposition they have carried their point, and the result was seen in the opening day, yesterday. A halfholiday having been declared. Lyttelton turned out to a man, not forgetting the ladies. The day waa very stormy, but as the people were on pleasure bent, the nigh wind had no deterrent effect, xhe ' townsfolk having contributed with marked liberality a number of prises, a good programe was got through and there was no hitch of any kind to mar the day's pleasure. Committee — Councillors Brlce, Hildyard, Milsom, and Stinson, Messrs Browning, Christian, Lewin, and Captain Owen, and they worked well. Careful judges, againat whose decisions no murmur was Mised, were found in Messrs H. Allwright, B. "Cotton, J, Joyce, M.H.R., H. N. Nalder, and F. Ronalds. Mr W, Hildyard, in his capacity as starter, did his work excellently, and Mr 6. W. Christian, as Hon.Sec,wasmo3tienergeticandcourteous, to him, the Committee and Judges we are indebted for assistance. The band of the Lyttelton Orphanage was on tbe ground, and played during the afternoon, and the inmates of the Asylum were attended to by various members of the Committee. Besides the races, the results of which are appended, a. number of minor events for children were got oft All enjoyed themselves, and a new era has begun in the athletic world of Lyttelton. The following are the results of the different events :«. Boys' race, under "fifteen years, ISO yards. First prize Mr W. G. Johnston's ?rize value 10s 6d,. second' prize Mr A. W. 'arson's trophy—There were fourteen entries. A. Weasteil won from scratch, with J. Olllver, 3yds, a good second. 200 yards handicap, open only to members of Lyttelton Cricket Club. First prize-Mr J. B. Milsom's bat value 25a. second • prize Mr J. Palmer's pair of cricketing trousers value 17s 6d—Five entered, and Ef Taylor, from scratch, won, with 6. W. Christian second. Place kick, open only to members of the Juniors' Football Club—E. Tayler 1, C. Ronalds 2. The strong wind which was blowing was greatly against the competitors. 440 yards handicap, open—First prize, Mr Hildyard's pair of boots, value 21s; second prize, Mr Field's quarter-ton coals; third-prize, Messrs Cook Bros.' half sheep. A. Roach l, C. Flavell 2, A. F. Page 3. Six entered. A good race. Page collided with a bystander. .. Sailors'race, once round course. Open Only to sailors belonging to vessels in port. First prize—Mr Brice's oilskin coat, value 10s 6d; second prize, Mr J. B. Hill's trophy. E. Dufti, barque Otago, 1; C. Crawford, ship Kirkcudbrightshire, 2. There were three entries.
