FOOTBALL.
piNTERBURY v SOUTH CANTERBURY.
yjn view of the approaching Union match v South Canterbury, a preliminary trial match will be played on the ;(ghriatchurch ground, North Park, to- ; morrow (Wednesday) afternoon, beginning 'ft 3 o'c lock. Teams:—Red and Black—W. ; Bjroughton, McLean, H. Wilson, Surman, (Ward, Cochrane, Bates, Childs (Christ--cfiurch), Dow, Evans, Hutton, McKee, Blank, Reilly, Weekes, v Colors—Petrie, CSraddock, Greenwood, Mountfort, Donnelly, Forbes, F. Homer, Childs (Meri- ; v&te), Dobbs, J. Fuller, Frost, Hassal, McCgurt, McGuire, McKay, Moir, Fender, Smcock; emergencies, Clarkson, JLeCren. The second trial match arranged by the Soath Canterbury Rugby Union, in view of the match with Canterbury, took place at Xemuka on Saturday last. Despite the bad weather there was a full muster of players. The ground wa« very wet, and the ball very greasy, consequently the game was confined very much to the for- ; wards. The game resulted in a win for the Probables by six points one goal and (three tries to nothing. The forwards, •however, will have to play a very much more determined game if they wish to thold their own against the Canterbury forwards. They play altogether too easy A game, and will have to push things much more than they do. The Probables flayed without a fullback. Macintosh jajnd Perry at three-quarters played a toplendid game. Shappere was much l-coff color, and seemed 'occasionally compfetely at sea when he got hold of the ball. Bart as half played his usual sterling game. F. Shallard, the pick of the forwards, played a very hard and fast game. Matheson and Studholme were in good sfojfm, but the latter, who almost invariav Mf_ gets the ball on the line out, would do far more service if he would pass oftener ts%. his half-backs. C. LeCren was in 3s>lendid;form for the Possibles, and fairly roan his place in the team. The Selection dgihmittee met after the match and 'dpteted the following team:—Back,' W. S&jfwart; Three-quarter Back. A. Shallard, and XX Macintosh; Half-backs, TW%. Hart and Laurenson; Forwards, Mftfcheaon, Studholme, Dyson, F. Shallard, QSBeCren, Stokes, Brinkman, Chiaholm aSBL" Goodall. The third and last practakes place in Timaru on Saturday nsfct, when the final selection will be mgtde. Unfortunately Mr McLean, the Pspbables full back, a sterling player and a|shoroughly reliable man, had his collar bghe broken in the trial match on Saturday week, and will probably be unable to P|y again this season. H. N. His kens, oSe of the Union forwards last year, also h Id his collar bone broken in a match a ci Sort time ago, and has had to retire from a Stive service.
