GRAIN SALES
Messrs Matson and Co. report ft* the week ending July 6th, an exee_. tionally quiet tone of business prevailing in grain for the time of year. Growers fi view of the recent cables from London an cautious in their dealings. Although these advices are not of a very promisingcha! racter, they still show that the European market has an upward tendency, and holders are evidently of opinion tha. values in these colonies must advance in due time to something worth while kee> ing for. Sydney prices meanwhile show a decided decline, and should further Call, fornian shipments come to hand muutcoa* tinue in that direction, but doubts an entertained as to whether the supply from that source will be of such magnl* tude as to warrant Australian buyers cutting down prices to such a pitch as our latest advices portend. Oatt and barley are scarcely altered in any way, the former keeping well up to values, while the latter is fought shy of. pending the meditated increase in the Vlctoriaa tariff. Potatoes are still firmly held by growers for advanced rates. Sydney catties of latest dates being favorable, t.fc. no New Zealand In the market, and Tee* manian up to such a figure as to encourage holding, we think there isJlttis doubt of this commodity being first class property very shortly. Grass seeds are beginning to attract some attention tot early sowing, and good lines could tie placed at top figures, prime samples of town dressed being most in request. Dairy produce is if anything slightly better in tone, but not sufficient to warrant any material advance in price. Oar auction of this date fully bears out our above remarks, as our entries were con* siderably under our average, while the keenness of competition favored the pros; pect of a rise in value, all lines, "with one or two exceptions," on our catalogue being placed very readily at full rates, while we still have numerous enquiries for wheat, (especially good chick), oats and barley of decent quality, which could now be quitted at reasonable prices.
