ST. JOHN AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION.
The first and second of the lectures in "First Aid to the Injured" has been delivered by Dr. Stewart to a very large and appreciative class of ladies, numbering from thirty to forty, of whom twenty-four are new pupils, candidates for the first certificate. The rest are members who attended the lectures last year, and are now fortifying themselves to pass the final examination for medallion. The lectures were given in the handsome City Council Chamber, where the skeleton (from the Hospital) and diagrams are exhibited and explained with great advantage to the class. The first lecture, delivered last week, was on the structure and functions of the human body, including a brief description of the bones, muscles, arteries and veins, the functions of the circulation, respiration, and of the nervous system. The second, which was delivered last night, was on the general direction of the main arteries, indicating the points where the circulation may be arrested by digital pressure, or by the application of a tourniquet, and the difference between arterial, venous and capillary bleeding, and the various extemporary means of arresting 16. At both lectures the use of the triangular :bandage was explained. Yesterday afternoon the majority of the ladies proved their appreciation of the value of the knowledge to be gained, by attending an hour before the commencement of the lecture and practising ban- , daging among themselves, and remained again for the same purpose at its close. The lecture itself lasted two hours, from 4 to 6 p.m. Dr. Patrick's second lecture to men took place last Tuesday night. A clans cf eleven men attended, the course of instruction being the same as described | above, except that during the lecture one of the pupils involuntarily presented the class with a genuine patient by fainting process of restoration deraon--B£rasqs in h» case was so successful that he '.wa» able to walk home afterwards witbottt assistance. With respect to the approaching costume concert, the per* formers are now assiduously practising, the Committee is busily at work, and a great success and treat to the public may be relied pn for the nights of the 19th and 20th inst.
