WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB'S AUTUMNAL RACE MEETING.

[Bt Telsgraph.] (By Oxjr Special Reporter, *' Spectator. , ') Thursday, March 7. Judge-Mr T. Owen. Starrer—Mr A. Higgio.. Clerk of the Scales—Mr E. A, Campbell. Clerk of the Course—Mr C. H. Chavannes. Handlcapper—Mr J. O. Evett. Timekeeper Mr W. Wilson. Stewards— Drs. TCarle and Connolly. Messrs A. Huorie, W. Wil-on, H. N. Harrison. J. Paul, and A. J. Parsons. Hon. Sec.—Mr Freeman K. Jackson. The weather to-day was beautifully fine, and the attendance large, estimated at 3000. The course was in splendid order, and altogether a most successful day's racing. The Cup was a good race; only five horses went to the post.Thepublic went for Leopold and Recluse, my fancy pick, Lady Norah being almost neglected for some reason hard to conceive. The pace was slow for a mile, but the last three quarters was run at a great pace, and Leopold faded when it came to real business. Dudu fairly surpassed all previous efforts, but though looking all over a winner at a distance, was caught and cleverly beaten by Lady Norah, who answered the first call made on her most resolutely. After passing Dudu she swerved, but did not interfere in the slightest with Mr Cutts' mare, as she was two clear lengths ahead, and won in the 200 yds comfortably. A protest was entered, and for a time some thought Bobbett was to be done out of a race fairly won, but the decision gave thorough satisfaction, and the win was most popular, though the mare was so little supported by the public. The victory of Ahua was due to his light weight and pace. This horse, who has been a good performer on the flat, never had any right to be pitchforked Into a hurdle race at eight-seven. Cynisca's superior quality amongst the two-year-olds was marked, though Lethe lb a fine colt, and Omaha and Quadrant more than useful. The hacks are a high class lot. The winner of the Hack Hurdle Race is a mare that will be heard of across country. If mistake not, out of the same mare as the once famous Loch Lomond, and up to weight and possessing strength, she must show up in the near future, while Ukatea. a son of Puriri, will also make a good fencer, and the Dove and Moire will be heard of in bigger events. The Welter was a closely contested race, the best finish of the day. Maribyrnong was scratched, pwing to the owner being informed that his horse was handicapped at 9st 71b, instead of Bst 71b, as the weights had appeared in print. This was annoying. Foxton went up a strong favorite, but only just got home. The Flying Handicap was remarkable for the brilliancy shown by Recluse, who, after being left at the post and losing fully fifty or sixty yards, managed to overhaul his field and win nicely in the good time of lmin 17 2-sth sec. The Press tips were most successful. Results: — First Hurdlb Handicap, of 100 soys ; second horse to receive 10 soys from the stakes. From the fall of the flag, Ahua led and after negotiating the first hurdle he forged ahead and swept out of the straight with a clean lead of six lengths, Kangaroo. Ruapehu, Maribyrnong and Jubilee being In close company, and the rest in straggling order thus early. Passing the stand the second time Ahua still held command, and making every post a winning post, and flying his hurdles in the most perfect manner throughout, eventually won very comfortably by six or eight lengths. Maribyrnong, who bad straggled hard, to catch him, tMng in the last quarter allowed Oddfellow, who came through his horses in the straight, to get second money. Then came Shillelagh, Kangaroo, and Germaine, all close together, Jubilee and Ruapehu having fallen back beaten. Blue Bell and Mangahaone never showed prominent, the pace being far too solid. Just before turning mto the straight Lady Florin was still in front, Camomile and Leopold next.
