V.R.C. AUTUMN MEJCHNO. Thihd Dat. [By Elbctrio Tklkoraph.—CoPTßieXT*) fPXS FBXBS ASSOCIATION.! Received March 7th, 10.20 p.m. MELBOURNE, March 7. It was a lovely autumn da; for the third day's racing of the Autumn Meeting of the V.R.C. Considering the collapse of the land boom, there was an exceedingly good attendance, fully 20,000 persons being present. The feature of the afternoon's sport was the phenomenal performance of the New Zealand bred horses, Lochiel and Carbine, the former winning the Autumn Handicap in a hand canter comparatively speaking, all but the last mile, which was traversed in 2min 39aec. Carbine's splendid performance in the Australian Cup had made him a very pronounced favorite for the Champion Stakes, even a>oney being taken at the finish. O'Brien rode a very patient race on him*, and coming home at a tremendous bat from the abattoirs fairly smothered Abercorn amidst deafening cheers, which were re-echoed when it. came to be remembered that Mr Donald Wallace had repeated the doughty deeds of Le Grand in lt&4 by running into place in the Newmarket Cup, the same horse afterwards winning the Cham* pion Stakes." The race waa very alow at the start, but the last mile and a half was cut out in 2min 37£ sec, Carbine being foo* lengths better than that, as he was Chat diefcauce behind Abercorn wheu the time was struck.
