SCHOOL COMMITTEE CONFERENCE.

A Conference of representatives of School Committees was held at the East Christehurch main school, Gloucester street, on Saturday at 2 p.m. The following representatives of School Committees were present:—Messrs J. T. Smith (Chairman), T. Gordon (St. Albans), H. Boyd (Rangiora), Handiside (Spreydon), Barnett (Leeston), Henderson (Charteris Bay), Ruddenklau (Cust), and Wallace (Richmond). The Chairman read the correspondence from the Board of Education as follows :— " October 13th, 1888.—Dear Sir,—l have the honor, by direction of the Board to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the Bth inst., forwarding two resolutions passed at a Conference of School Committees held on the 24th August. In reply I am to say that the Board wul at its next meeting consider the question of the manner of selecting teachers for appointments. You will probably have seen in the newspapers a notice of motion given on the subject. As to the second resolution, I am to point out that the choice of reading books for Standards VI. and VIL is left open. If, therefore, any principal teacher thinks it advisable to adopt the " Royal Reader " he is at liberty to do sc.—Yours, &c, J. V. Colborne Vebl, Secretary. " November 3rd, 1888. Sir—With reference to your letter of the Bth October, I have the honor to forward the following resolution passed by the Board at its meeting last Thursday—" That ,in compliance with the reiterated request of the United School Committees, it be an instruction to the Appointments Committee to forward to the School Committee interested, the names of aU teachers applying for vacant situations, distinguishing the names approved by the Board from those not considered suitable, such names to be sent on a printed form explaining to" the Committee *hat the names not approved by the Board for that particular school are not necessarily objectionable for any other school, and may not have anything' against them affecting their general character.—Yours, I &c, J. After some conversation respecting the nominations of candidates for the vacancies on the Board of Education, it was moved by Mr Gordon, and seconded by Mr Hender-ON—" That the meeting adjourn till that day four weeks; and that it be held in the same place and at the same hour; the Chairman to be con- | vener."
