Fourth year—Males, 16; females, 31; total, 47; passed, 37; failed, 10. TotalMales, 56; females, 126; total, 182; passed 152; failed, 30. Mrs J. S. Guthrle, assisted by two other ladies, undertook the examination of the female pupil teachers in needlework, her report on which la attached."

Mrs Guthrie's report was as under —" I have much pleasure in reporting most favorably of the needlework of the pupil teachers which has been examined by mc, with the assistance of the Misses ColborneVeel. We, however, think it desirable that the attention of teachers should be called to the fact that in sending in the year's work several pupils make miniature garments instead of those of wearable size, thereby depriving themselves of a certain number of marks. The work in each case has been carefully examined, and one or two instances have occurred in which the seams have first been stitched in a sewing machine (without ■ cotton) thereby facilitating the regularity of the hand-stitching. The marks given in all these cases are necessarily lower than they otherwise would have been. I have thought it well to call attention to these defects as being the only unsatisfactory features in an excellent show of needlework, which exhibits generally a very fair standard of merit. It is satisfactory to observe that in the training of so many young people, good attention is paid.to this most important branch of a woman's education."

The Board passed a vote of thanks to Mrs Guthrie and the Misses VeeL

At the request of Mr Wright the Secretary read a letter which had been sent to the Ashburton School Committee, and which was succeeded by the resignation of the Head Master and the Committee.

Mr Wright wished to see the letter published, as it would show the public that the Board bad been actuated by a desire to see the interests of the school advanced.

Mr Cunningham seconded the motion •pro forma. The letter elicited some discussion, after which

Mr Wright said he was content to withdraw his motion for the present.

Motion withdrawn, and the Secretary was authorised to take steps for a new election for a Committee.

Mr Bevan-Brown wrote, on behalf of the Conference of High School Teachers, asking that the Board would alter the time of its scholarship examination, in order that scholars may start at the College with the first term.

The Chairman said that it would entail some extra work for the one year, bat the change ould be made. The Board decided to accede to the request. The Board acceded to a request that the name of the Kaiapoi Island North school should be changed to Clarkville. This concluded the business, and the Board adjourned.
