VOLUNTEERING AT LYTTELTON.

The Lyttelton Navals and N Battery Artillery paraded in the Drillshed on Monday night for Government inspection, under Serjeant-Major Barrett, Inspecting Officer. The former paraded 51 rank and file, Lieutenant Arnold in command, and tho latter 39, ' under Lieutenant Mclntyre. A'ter the parade was dismissed, an aii,,.>urnment was made by the N Battery- to their new orderly room, where a cold collation had been get but. There were visitors from the Navals, Christenurch Engineers and E Battery. A most jolly evening was spent, after honor had been done to the various toasts.' The N Battery are to be congratulated on the splendid orderly-roo.u they now possess, its dimensions being 36ft by 16ft, every care having been taken in the erection, which is on the clear ground in front of the Drill Shed, to consider the comfort of members. The room is large and spacious, and at one end there are racks for the arms, the walls have been nicely varnished, and a fireplace is provided for warmth in the winter. There is no dcubt that these orderly rooms are the means of keeping the men in the Company together, and as the literature which is generally supplied is of a martial nature, the men are being thoroughly educated in the use of the muniMons of war. The volunteers themselves are a fine body, and are deserving of the greatest credit for their proficiency in drill and the general esprit de corps which exists throughout.
