THE BEST OF APPLES.

Last year the editor of the Garden raised in the columns of that journal the subject of the " needless number" of apples offered to the public in the nurserymen's catalogues, and the necessity of thegrower ascertaining and confining himself to the growth of only the best kinds. To settle the question a kind of apple plebiscite was opened, and as might be expected numerous letters and papers appeared on the subject. ■ The number of that journal issued on the 15th September contains what may be taken to be the decision of the fruit-growers of Britain—and the following is the result, the seventeen varieties first named being those which by the general voice have been declared the best of all British apples :— 1. How far this list is applicable to the uses of the New Zealand growers, it is perhaps difficult yet to determine. But as every fruit grower will recognise in this list the names of trees which are familiar to us all, it. is more; than probable that it will prove quite as useful here as it must be to the Home grower. The time will arrive when a similar plebiscite may be taken for New Zealand, with the greatest advantage to the colonial orchardist.
