The second day's racing took place thie afternoon. The weather was much finer than on Tuesday, but the air was very keen. The race "trains were well patronised, the attendance being much larger thau on opening day. The course, after being carefully looked to again on Wednesday, was in capital order, competent judgesreinarkingtnat it was about as good as was ever raced on at Timaru. All of I the officials worked heartily to ensure buccess. Mr P. W. Eiby made his debut as Secretary, and discharged his onerous duties in a way which gave universal satisfaction. (Dunn) 0 Prom a good start Juggler and Presto ran in company, Effigy running olf at the first hurdle, in taking the grand stand hurdle Juggler was slightly ahead, but on coming to the back stretch Presto had command. Rounding the home turn Cotton improved his position, and the tiio entered Che straight together. The hurdle here proved fatal to Juggler, who fell, throwing Walls on to his face and left shoulder, cutting his face badly. Presto and Mohawk then fought out the finish, and the former coming well from the rails gained the verdict by fully three lengths. Time, 3min osec. Dividend, £1 11s 6d. Corinna made the pace, and several horses ran wide, Rosespur going inside the first two posts. At the turn Jack, who had been lying fifth, improved his position, but rounding the home turn Sir Julias came away with a grand spurt, and beirg never collared won comfortably by about two lengths. When the horses did get away. Temptation ran very wide and at the stand left the course altof ether. In passing the Judge's box the rst time round Evening Star came her old game, being taken right to the front, and at the back stretch had a lead or several lengths. The Brewer, however, soon ran up to her and College Boy got through, gaining at the turn. Once their heads were turned for home Kimberley made a supreme effort for a few strides, leading the field and looking all over a winner. Then Quibble joined issue. A slashing race commenced on the trio coming together till the Brewer was called on for a final effort, and, responding without the whip, improved his position at the rails, white landing him a winner by a bare length. College Boy ran a big horse under the whip, but bad to rest content with a half length beating by Quibble, who also ran very gamely. Fleurette was hopelessly bea en, and Evening Star and Kimberley collided suddenly at a few yards from the post. Time, 2min 16sec Dividend, £7 4s. Handicap Timje Trot of 20 soys; second 5 soys. . Semolina soon had Kitty and Nelly beaten, winning easily. Time 6min 20sec. Dividend, £3 lls. Ladies' Purse of 25 soy, second 5 sor. Six fcrlongs. 120. Mohawk lost the start, but the race lay between Doubtful and Sir Julius, who rapidly put daylight between the others. In the straight Sir Julius had Doubtful at his mercy, winning comfortably with a bit in hand.* Time, lmin Slisec. Dividend, £20s6d. Consolation Handicap of 25 soya. One mile. 107. Messrs Hobbs' Hermitage, Sst 101b (Dodd) 1 31. Mr Alexander's Doubtful, 6st 101b (George) 2 78. Mr "Walker's Snapshot, Bat 71b ((White) 3 14. Rosespur, Get 51b, and 15, Quickstep, also went to the post. The starting was a series of accidents. Quickstep played up, and unseated Brown, and would not start. Rosespur then bolted, and made for the saddling paddock, rushed through the open gateway, and threw Thompson against the gatepost, smashing his forehead badly and rendering him unconscious for some time. When they did getaway Snapshot forced the pace, but at the turn Hermitage came to the front and won by a bar<i length from Doubtful, the Musket—Venture gelding, who has run most indifferently at the meeting finishing lengths in the rear. Dividend, £2 Is 6d. The sum of £1547 went through the machine at to-day's meeting, makine a total of £3418 for the meeting.
