SOUTH RAKAIA.

The monthly meeting of the South Rakaia Road Board was held at Hakaia on Thursday. Present—Messrs E. S. Coster (Chairman), Lyttelton, Stringfellow, and Turner. The Chairman reported that he had authorised the filling up of gaps in the three chain plantation, and asked the Board's approval, which was granted. It was resolved to accept the offer of Win. Morten to purchase the timber referred to in his letter to the Board last month. It was resolved also to fill in a drain near Mr Holmes' fence on McPhail's road, and let the storm water take its natural course. The Chairman reported that he had made inquiries of the County Council with reference to the Council's application to the Waste Lands Board for moneys accruing from the sale of Tillage settlement land, and had been informed that the application did not include the Rakaia village settlement, but referred to the outlying portions of the county. It was resolved that the Board offer Mr Gardiner the sum of £10 per acre for land for a gravel pit on section 25379, the Board to pay the costs of transfer also. A deputation consisting of Messrs Holmes, Pyke, Hardy, and Irwin, representing the South Rakaia Domain Board, attended to ask for the expenditure of the snm of £20 of Road Board money in clearing gorse and cutting fences in the big plantation. After the deputation had retired, the Board found, on reading the Road Board Act, that certain clauses justified them in agreeing to the application, and it was resolved that the request be granted. A letter was received from the poundkeeper, informing the Board that in two instances lately a horse impounded had been sold by him, but had failed to realise the amount of fees due thereon. He asked authority to sue the owners of the horses for the balance. It was resolved that the Board have to receive half of all the fees chargeable, and held the poundkeeper responsible for their collection. Mr Wm. L. Allan wrote, informing the Board of the sale of portion of the Acton Estate to Messrs D. Dolan, Richards, and Muckle, and asking for the alteration of the roll accordingly. The application of Mr T. Cronin, tor an extension of time on his contract on the Boundary road, was granted. The Treasury. Wellington, wrote, notifying the Board that the amounts of 6s 6d, £1116s 10d, and £102 Bs, being one third of the proceeds of land sold on deferred payments, had been placed to its credit. An account from Morris Brown was ordered to stand over till next meeting. The following tenders for work were accepted:—Shingling Bushy Park road, D. Murphy, Is 2d per yard; tussocking Bushy Park road and Sprott'e road, W. Stevens, 5d for the former and 3£d the latter per chain ; forming Hatfield road, T. Cronln, 4s lljd per chain; Mitcham road, D. Ready, £32 10s. The sum of £13812s 8d was passed for payment.
