Court George Grey, just released from Picton gaol, was charged with obtaining 10s from Richard Webb, jockey, by a spurious order. The accused elected to be summarily dealt with, and, the offence being proved, the Bench sent him to the Terrace Gaol. Wellington, for three months, with hard labor. In an action Clarke v Griffiths for ejectment, the title of the plaintiff —one of the lessees —was attacked on the ground that very important concessions were made shortly after the sale, calculated to defeat the intent of the Legislature in having the sale by auction, as were it known leases could be obtained under less stringent conditions, probably there would have been better bidding. William Leeson Tipson, arrested here yesterday, was brought up at the Police Court to-day, charged with stealing five £5 notes and four £1 notes, the property of Lawrence Ford, of Thornbury, Southland, on 31st January last. The accused was remanded to Invercargill. A deputation waited on the 3—inieter of Justice to-day to urge that the Normal School site, which is found unsuitable, as there is no playground and children are forced into the street, should be exchanged, and utilised for purposes of police ojfjices and Courts. Mr Fergus said he had looked into the matter and found Hie site unsuitable for the purpose, but he could hold out no hope of an exchange. The Colonial Secretary arrived in Dunedin to-night. Mr Fergus has delayed his departure for • elbourne for a week. INVERCARGILL, eptember 19.

The Invereargill waterworks were formally opened to-day by the vlayor, Mr A. Tapper, who started the pumping engines. The works are not yet completed, but wafer will from this out be at the service of householders. Messrs -nderapn and Morrison, who laid the pipes throughioiit the town, presented the Mayor with a gold turncock's key in remembrance of the event.
