EARTHQUAKE.
Shortly alter ten o'clock last night three sharp shocks of earthquake were experienced, lasting several seconds, the direction being east and west. It was pretty generally felt throughout the district. At the Working Men's Club Recreation Hall, where a performance was in progress by the dramatic class, considerable consternation was caused amongst the ladies of the audience by the pictures on the wall swaying outwards. The exact time of the shock was 10.4 pan. [PKESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.] HOKITIKA, August SO. A heavy shock of earthquake was felt to-night at five minutes past ten. The duration was 20sec, and the direction west to east.
