i «< i Wednesday, August 29. Afternoon Session. The President took his seat at 4 p.m. The Hey. F. Knowles read the annual report of the Church Property Trust \ Estate. At the request of the Rev. C. Bo wen, the \ correspondence referred to in the report ' connected with the case recently before the Court of Appeal, was read. parochial districts of the diocese be assessed according to a scale to be fixed by the Synod, for a sum sufficient to supplement the income of the general f una. from which the expenses of Synod and diocesan administration are paid.' That the scale shall bo for eras 1, at the rate of £2 per annum; class 2/at the rate, of £1 10s per annum ; class 3, at the rate of i'l per annum. That the Standing Committee shall deckle what parishes and parochial districts be placed in the several classes; that the payment sJhall be halfyearly ; that the above clause be numbered 2, and the clause hitherto numbered 2 be re-nnmbered 3." Leave was granted, and the first reading of the Bill was made an order for next day. Mr Harman moved- , -" Tbat a Select Committee, consisting of his Lordship, with five clergy and five laity, be appointed to consider the report of the Commission on the bishopric estate appointed by his Lordship, and to report to the Synod as to the best means of giving practical effect to the recommendations of the Commission." The Rev. J. W. Stack seconded the motion. Canon Cholmondeley moved as an amendment—" That all the words after the word Synod be omitted. The Bey. E. K. Otway seconded the amendment. The amendment was carried on the voices*, and the words were struck out. The motion as amended was then agreed to. Mr Harman further moved, and it was agreed to- " That the following be the members of the Committee: —The Very Rev. the Dean, Canon Cholmondeley, Revs. C. Bowen, W. A. Pascoe, H. C. M. Watson, the Hon. the Chancellor of the Diocese, Messrs H. P. Murray-Aynsley, W. H. Hargreaves, T. S. Weston, and the mover." On the motion of the Rev. J. W. Stack, leave of absence' was granted to Mr b\ de c. Malet for this session. The mover said that members of the Synod would, mo doubt, also join in wishing Mr Malet a. safe return from England, seeing that he was such an able and earnest worker in the interests of the Church. (Hear, hear.) The Rev. E. A. Scott moved—"That it be a recommendation to the forthcoming session of the General Synod to prepare a form of letter commendatory, to be filled in and supplied by the clergy of the Church of the Province of New Zealand to members of their congregations and otbern who may at any time be leaving their parishes for residence elsewhere, whether in New Zealand or in other parts of the world." Fj.avem, pointed out that clergymen frequently gave letters of introduction to persons who were leaving their parishes, to the clergyman of the parish iv which they were gplflff fcp resjde, The Rev. H. C. M. VVatson advocated a diocesan form of recommendatory letter. He had received lettere from all parts of the world. Mr H. P. Hill considered a stereotyped form of letter was not required. The Very Rev. the Dkan said that tba want of such letters was frequently the cause of persons being lost to the Church. The Rev. W. Harper pointed out chat if regular forms of letters were in existence, and the fact became widely known, clergymen might be placed in an. awkward position by persons demanding letters when it was not desirable that they should

receive them. [Hear, bear.} The Yen. Archdeacon IrfseAßD said he had received printed forms, filled in recommending the person referred to to* his care, and nothing was said for or against hfm.
