HARBOR BOARD.

» , . • The ordinary monthly meeting pf the Lyttelton Harbor Board was held al; 2.30 p.m. yesterday, at the Chrfetchurcb offices. Present —Mr P. Cunningham (Chairmen), and Messrs W. B. Tosswill, H. W. Peryman, R. Westenra, F. Graham, & H. Webb, C. R. Blakistbn and Parsons. Leave of absence from the meeting was granted to Mr C. W. Turner,, and the Chairman stated the Hon. J; T. Peacock was in Wellington. • The Chairman reported as under '.<— v The following sums have- been paid in since our last meeting: wharfage, £710; pilotage and port charges, £510 l3s : 6d; towage, «c., £17919s 0d; reret. No. 5 Store, £500; total, £1900 18s. The sum of £3000 has been placed on fixed' deposit with our bankers for three months, as directed. Accounts for payment -amounting to £U59 Is .9d will be laid before you. They have been examined by a member of tho Finance Committee. It will be seen from the pass book on the table that the credit balance of current

account amounts to £1424 lls 9d. The report of the Harbor Improvement Committee upon the storage arrangements of the Board and on other matters will be brought up this af ceraoon. A reply has been received from the Wellington Harbor Board co the effect that they decline the offer made to hire to them our dredging plant. Their letter will be read. The repairs to the Sumner jetty approach, and erection of a boat-shed there have been completed under the supervision of Inspector Derbidge, It was found that a large quantity of the rock forming the original approach to the jetty had disappeared altogether, and the result was we had to obtain fresh material to complete- the repairs. A letter will be read' from' the Oamaru Stone Company In reference to' the wharfage charges on their stone. In the matter of leasing Lot No. 15 to the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, after several interviews with the Manager (Mr Gooke) and with Mr Burnett (the Assistant Railway Engineer), I brought the question before the Harbor Improvement Committee and their recommendation thereon, will be laid be> fore you to-day. Mr J. E. Thacker, of the Okain's Bay Road Board, ha* written asking for particulars of screw piles we have in stock, with a view to purchasing them. There are twenty piles In all, weighing about 13cwt each. Inspector Derbridge estimates their value at £5 per ton. With your approval, I propose to place them under otter to Mr Thacker, at that price. A deputation, consisting of Messrs E. C. Curtis and W. Mutton, will wait upon the Board to-day in reference to the sale of small quantities of • coals from the hulks lying at the wharvos." - The report of the Harbor. Improvement Committee was read as follows:—.'■' Stores Department—The Committee reppramend that the present labor arrangement in the. Harbor Board Stores be continued until the end of the year. Appointment/of Storeman—That Richard TreleaVen' he 1 appointed working storeman, at £3 a week, and William Foster be appointed, to the office of sampler, at the.HirbqrBoard stores. Contract Deposit on Stores Contract—The Committee recommend the matter be left in the hands of the Chairman to settle. sion, the Board desire to place on record their entire satisfaction at the manner in which both these officers have discharged their duties since they have been in the Boards service.! , . _, . The appointment of engine driver was left in the bands of the Chairman. The Board's warehouseman at Lyitelton reported that the amount of grain in stores was—Wheat, 52,312 sacks ; pats, 5263 sacks; also 620 sacks of beans, 44 of peas, 594 of potatoes, and 1070 of grass seed. The warehouseman also reported on the working of the Board's stores for the information of members. The accounts as submitted were passed for payment. Messrs E. C. Curtis and "W. Mutton waited on the Board, and pointed out that the Brunner Coal Company vrere selling small quantities of coal from their hulk lying alongside the wharf. They gave the Kailway their own weights, and no haulage was charged on the trucks by which the Company passed the coal ou to their Yards. The matter was left in the hands of the Chairman and Mr Webb. The Board than adjourned till 3rd October.
