TAXATION—INCREASE OF SUGAR DUTY.
TO THB EBITOE OP THE FBBSS. Sib,—l quite agree with "Pair Play" that an increase of sugar duty is not a fair tax; I think this tax is to be put on sugar so as to encourage sugar beet growing, but it has been pointed out more than once sugar from beet is not suitable for preserves, and byputting a heavier..tax ..on sugar it will be the means"of crippling one of our local industries, namely, the jam factories.' I think anyone could stand a heavier tax on tea, and then the squatters would pay a little more of their share, as they use a large quantity of tea for their men. I quite agree with " Fair Flay , ' that gentlemen's carriages and other articles of luxury should be taxed much heavier than they are. Ido not know that there is any tax on lawn mowers; of .course it is only the rich who require them. Tours, &c, Patb Tax.
