NEW BRIGHTON PROPOSED TEAMWAY.

TO THB SDITOB O> TH3I PBXSS. •Sm,—Some few months ago a great many of the most prominent and wellknown citizens of Christchurch held several numerously attended meetings for the purpose of constructing a tramway to New Brighton. A deputation was appointed, and as I read in your columns interviewed the City Council, for as the Council was about to construct a tramline to their Eeeerves, two-thiids of the way, it was thought a good opportunity for those in favour of a line to the Beach to avail themselves of the municipal line as far as it went, form a company* and carry it on to the New Brighton beach, so that -the people of Christchurch could have a cheap means of getting to the sea breezes. The city loan has been successfully floated. That portion is bound to be made in a few months, and now the whole thing seems to have dropped through, at least no meeting has been advertised in your paper. As the old proverb has it, I suppose " what is everybody's business is nobody's business." As some 300 to 800 people possess small sections of land down there, on which, no doubt, a great many would build and reside if cheap and quick facilities for getting to and from their places of business to the seaside were available, I hope the promoters who were so energetic at the start will not turn back now they have put their hands to the plough, butcarry the thing through (since it is but a question of some JBSOOO a? I understand), and give all the people of Christchurch who cannot afford buggies a chance to get a mouthf ol of the exhilarating sea-air. Judging from the success accorded to the railway excursions, I have no doubt that on fine Sundays and holidays thousands would gladly avail themselves of such a cheap means of a day's outing for themselves and children on the sea beach.

Hoping you will excuse my trespassing on your valuable space,—Yours, Ac, M. Txwnfee.
