The official declaration of the result of the Sydenham election was made at the Oddfellows' Kail, Colombo road, fay Mr George Booth, the Beturning Officer. The votes recorded were aa follows: — Colombo Eoad. Addington. Total White ... 525 251 776 Scott ... 362 100 462 Majority for White 814 Mr William White, junior, was accordingly declared to be duly elected as member for Sydenham. # Mr White, who wae received with cheers. then, came forward and made fi. short speech, Ixl whicK *h.e tbanted -fcirc electors for *;fc>e Ixoxxorur tlxey Tiaci done Tiim., and ±3ie mwmWMWiMim Tm had been, a contest, and. he, for one, was not eorry for it, as ha thought it put things on a better footing. His defeat he attributed to iiia lateness in coining for-/ ward, and would etaod for tho Mit election. - Messrs C. Ladda and J. Beattie also epoke, and a vote of thanks to the Eetarnh}g Officer was mored by Mr White, seconded by Mr Scott, and carried by acclamation.
